MLB – Royals Rip Sanchez, Tigers
The Kansas City Royals roughed up Anibal Sanchez for six run and nine hits over six innings, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-2 Saturday. Alcides Escobar started the rout by slamming Sanchez’ first pitch into the left field seats for a home run. Nick Castellanos drove in both Detroit runs with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and a triple in the sixth.
The loss drops the Tigers a half-game behind of the Royals in the American League Central Division.
The Tigers wrap up their series against the Kansas City Royals tonight. Shane Greene will start against Chris Young. Hear the first pitch at 8:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
An MRI has confirmed that Detroit starter David Price has a mildly strained right hamstring. Price still hopes to be able to make his next start on Thursday.
The news is worse for Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila, who was placed on the disabled list Saturday after “loose bodies” were discovered in his left knee. The “bodies” are likely bone fragments, and will probably need to be surgically removed. A typical recovery for such arthroscopic surgery would be about six weeks. Bryan Holaday has been brought up from Toledo to back up James McCann.
The Milwaukee Brewers bombed the Chicago Cubs 12-4 Saturday. Gerardo Parra, Jean Segura and Jason Rogers homered for the Brewers. Kyle Lohse earned the win, despite giving up four runs on seven hits through five innings.
The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
Brewers’ center fielder Carlos Gomez missed his third straight game Saturday with a hip strain. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez missed his second straight game with back tightness. Both are considered “day to day.” Milwaukee added some organizational depth at third base by signing Chris Nelson to a minor league deal. He’s spent time with the Rockies, Yankees, Angels and Padres, and was released last week by the Phillies.
