Rogers Powers Tigers’ Win – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Hancock softball team will vie for a regional title tomorrow. Rudyard and Norway will meet in the first semifinal at 10:00 at Rapid River. The Bulldogs will face Ishpeming in the second semifinal. Our pregame coverage on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com will begin around 12:10 – possibly earlier, if the first contest ends quickly. We’ll also broadcast the championship game, if Hancock advances.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
• The game between Northern Driveline and Garnet Garage was rescheduled to Monday because of weather.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team has introduced a new recruit. Elizabeth Ayala is from Chino, California. She’s transferring in from East Los Angeles College.

NBA

In NBA tournament second-round play last night…
• The Jazz edged the Clippers 117-111. Utah leads that series 2-0.
• The Bucks slipped past the Nets 86-83. Brooklyn leads that series 2-1.

Tonight…
• The Hawks welcome the 76ers. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Nuggets host the Suns. Phoenix leads that set 2-0.

NHL

In NHL tournament second-round play last evening…
• The Golden Knights dispatched the Avalanche 6-3. Vegas wins that series 4-2.

There are no NHL games scheduled today.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers took control early, and cruised past the Seattle Mariners 8-3 yesterday. Jake Rogers had a big day, with a home run and an RBI triple. Robbie Grossman had a homer and an RBI single, and Jonathan Schoop also went deep. Tyler Alexander opened a bullpen day by giving up a run on three hits before leaving in the third inning. Joe Jiménez was awarded the win in relief.

The Tigers host the Chicago White Sox tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Lucas Giolito. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit added outfielder Derek Hill to the injured list yesterday, after he suffered a shoulder strain when he hit the wall while making a catch in Wednesday’s game. As shoulder strains go, it’s considered mild. Daz Cameron has been called up from Toledo to fill in. Reliever Derek Holland has been added to the injured list, with shoulder inflammation. Alex Lange has been brought up. And, reliever Rony Garcia sprained his left knee while warming up for yesterday’s game. The Tigers recalled Beau Burrows from Toledo to take his spot on the roster. Detroit is missing 12 of the players on its 40-man roster, with 11 on the injured list, and Jeimer Candelario on the bereavement list.

The Milwaukee Brewers broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth inning, and went on to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 yesterday. Daniel Vogelbach homered. Freddy Peralta gave up a run over four innings, and struck out six. He exited the game after a 37-minute rain delay. Josh Hader was awarded the win in relief.

The Brewers entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Chase De Jong.

As expected, Milwaukee placed third baseman Travis Shaw on the injured list yesterday, after he dislocated his shoulder while making diving play in Wednesday’s contest. Reliever Patrick Weigel has been called up. The Brewers have eight players on the injured list.

NFL

Green Bay Packers tight end Jace Sternberger will miss the first two games of the upcoming season. He’s been suspended for a substance abuse policy violation.

With Aaron Rodgers holding out, the Packers have signed yet another quarterback. Jake Dolegala played college ball at Central Connecticut State, He spent the past two seasons in the Bengals and Patriots organizations.

Fishing

This is Michigan’s summer Free Fishing weekend. Tomorrow and Sunday, anyone can fish, with or without a license. All other fishing regulations still apply.
