MLB: Tigers Fall to Royals
Justin Verlander shut out the Royals through six innings… but unraveled in the seventh, and Detroit lost to Kansas City 5-2 yesterday. Verlander had allowed just two hits over those six innings… but gave up four straight singles to open the seventh. The rest of the damage came against Ian Kroll, Al Alburquerque and Phil Coke.
The All-Star break begins today. The Tigers will return to action on Friday at home against Cleveland.
Detroit’s lead in the American League Central now stands at six-and-a-half games over the Royals.
Brewers Snap Losing Streak
The Brewers broke their seven-game losing streak with an 11-2 victory over the Cardinals yesterday. Wily Peralta gave up just one unearned run over seven innings to earn the win. The Milwaukee offense pounded out 19 hits, including five by Elian Herrera… who started only because Jeff Bianchi had a sore elbow. Khris Davis homered.
The Brewers return to action Friday at Washington.
The win put Milwaukee back into first place the National League Central… a game ahead of Saint Louis.
Shortstop Jean Segura remains away from the team. He’s returned home to the Dominican Republic, following the sudden death of his nine-month-old son. Segura has been placed on the bereavement list. Players can remain on the bereavement list for as many as seven games. It’s not known when Segura will return.
Channing Wins Durocher Tourney
The visiting team from Channing won the annual Leo Durocher Memorial Wood Bat Tournament at the Stanton Field over the weekend. In the preliminary games on Saturday, Wolverine-Orbit defeated Superior Waters Fly Shop 6-3. The Tri-City North Stars eliminated BlueSky Health 5-1. Channing ousted Mosquito Inn 5-4, and Stanton shut out Pat’s Foods 7-0. In the semifinals yesterday, Wolverine-Orbit defeated the Tri-City North Stars 3-1… and Channing edged Stanton 4-3 in 10 innings. Channing then took the title with a 7-2 win over Wolverine-Orbit.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, 906/Pilgrim River Steakhouse takes on Auto Value at 6:15… then faces Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation at 7:30.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, The Marley Bar meets McGann’s/Northern Auto.
Pistons Sign Butler, Augustin
Media reports say the Detroit Pistons have agreed to contracts with free agents Caron Butler and D.J. Augustin. Like earlier free agent signee Jodie Meeks, Butler and Augustin are known for their outside shooting… an area where Detroit has struggled. Butler averaged 10 points per game for the Bucks and Thunder. Augustin averaged 13 for the Bulls.
Robinson Sweeps Run the Keweenaw
Sam Robinson won all three events at this weekend’s Run the Keweenaw trail running festival. On Saturday, Robinson took the Mount Baldy Hill Climb, with a time of 18:37.6. Andy Liebner placed second, and Jonathan Kilpela third. Christina Mishica was the top women’s finisher. In the12k Copper Harbor Trails Challenge, Robinson again finished first, with a time of 56:49.0. Liebner was second, and Kilpela again placed third. Mishica again was the top women’s finisher. In the 25k Carl Olson Memorial Adventure Run yesterday, Robinson completed the sweep with a winning time of 1:44:59.0. Kilpela finished a minute off the pace, and Liebner was third. Caitlin Smith was the fastest woman… with Mishica second. Smith was named the overall women’s winner. For results, click here.
Colling Wins Chassell 5k
Jacob Colling won the first Chassell Strawberry Festival 5k on Saturday with a time of 19:22.2. Clark Isaacson finished second… and Jackie Isaacson finished less than a second behind him for third place overall, and first place among women. Full results are here.
