MLB: Tigers Win Fifth Straight
Rick Porcello won his 12th game of the season yesterday, as the Tigers beat the Royals 5-1. Porcello left at the end of the seventh inning with a slim 2-1 lead. Joba Chamberlain pitched a perfect eighth… and J.D. Martinez and Alex Avila homered in the ninth to give Detroit a cushion.

The Tigers wrap up that set at Kansas City this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 2:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Detroit’s lead in the American League Central now stands at seven-and-a-half games over the Royals.

Brewers Drop Seventh Straight
Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoThe Brewers’ slide reached seven games, with a 10-2 loss to the Cardinals yesterday. Jimmy Nelson came up from Nashville to make the start for Milwaukee… and was blasted for eight runs in less than five innings.

The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Carlos Martinez.

The loss dropped Milwaukee into a first-place tie with Saint Louis in the National League Central.

Shortstop Jean Segura was not with the team yesterday. He’s returned home to the Dominican Republic, following the sudden death of his nine-month-old son. Segura has been placed on the bereavement list, and Elian Herrera has been called up to fill in. Players can remain on the bereavement list for as many as seven games. It’s not known when Segura will return.

Twilight LeagueDurocher Tourney Continues Today
The Leo Durocher Memorial Wood Bat Tournament wraps up at the Stanton Field today. Yesterday’s results were not reported. The semifinals will be played today. The winners of yesterday’s first two games will meet at 11:00. The winners of the second two games will play at 1:30. The championship game will start at 4:00.

Run the Keweenaw Concludes Today
Run the Keweenaw LogoAt the annual Run the Keweenaw trail running event, Samuel Robinson won the Mount Baldy Hill Climb Saturday morning, with a time of 18:37.6. Andy Liebner placed second, and Jonathan Kilpela third. Christina Mishica was the top women’s finisher. In the12k Copper Harbor Trails Challenge, Robinson again finished first, with a time of 56:49.0. Andy Liebner was second, and Kilpela again placed third. Mishica again was the top women’s finisher. The 25k Carl Olson Memorial Adventure Run begins this morning at 8:00. For details, click here.

Strawberry FestivalColling Wins Chassell 5k
Jacob Colling won the first Chassell Strawberry Festival 5k on Saturday with a time of 19:22.2. Clark Isaacson finished second… and Jackie Isaacson finished less than a second behind him for third place overall, and first place among women.
