Yoenis Cespedes blasted a grand slam home run in the first inning, as the Detroit Tigers pounded the Chicago White Sox 9-1 yesterday. Cespedes added a two-run shot in the third inning. Shane Greene gave up a run in the sixth inning – the first earned run he’s surrendered all season – and left after the seventh.

The Tigers open a four-game home set against the Yankees tonight. Alfredo Simon will start against C.C. Sabathia. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander has been told to stop throwing until his arm stops hurting. He’ll remain on the disabled list, and Kyle Lobstein will remain in the rotation. Closer Joe Nathan is reporting progress with his right elbow strain, and could pitch a bullpen session today, Nathan is eligible to return from the DL on Wednesday, but may do a minor league rehab assignment before coming back.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 yesterday. Matt Garza gave up all five runs over six innings. The Brewers have lost 10 of their first 12 games, and are off to the worst start in team history.

The Brewers begin a four-game home set against the Reds tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Anthony DeSclafani.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Game Three
The Detroit Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning in game three of their opening-round NHL playoff series tomorrow night. Petr Mrazek will start in goal for Detroit. Justin Abdelkader will be back in the lineup, after missing a few games because of a hand injury. The best-of-seven series is tied at a win per team. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MTU Women’s Hoops Players Honored
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has handed out its season awards. Jillian Ritchie was named Most Valuable Player. Kelli Guy earned the Most Improved Trophy. Sarah LewAllen was named Top Newcomer. Emily Harrison won the Sportsmanship Award. Kerry Gardner took the Scholastic Award, with a 3.94 GPA.
