College Hockey
There’s been no confirmation from Marquette, but there are reports that a former Northern Michigan University hockey player will return as the team’s new head coach. The Grand Forks Herald says that Dave Shyiak, a member of the Wildcats’ 1991 NCAA championship team, will take the helm. Shyiak has been the associate head coach at St. Cloud State the past four seasons. He previously served six seasons as associate head coach at Western Michigan University, and eight seasons as the head coach at Alaska-Anchorage, where the Seawolves compiled a record of 80-177-33.
Shyiak will replace Grant Potulny, who stepped down a few weeks ago to pursue a job in the professional ranks.

The Tigers scored four times in the fifth inning, and held on to defeat the Phillies 4-1 last night. The four-spot came off Philadelphia ace Ranger Suárez, who suffered just his second loss of the year. Andy Ibáñez drove in two runs with a single, and Riley Greene plated another with a triple. Detroit ace Tarik Skubal allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, and improved his record to 9-3. Philly’s only run came when Bryce Harper hit his 20th homer of the season off Jason Foley in the ninth.
The Tigers host the Phillies again this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Before the game, Detroit brought pitcher Easton Lucas up from Toledo. He was claimed off waivers from the A’s a few weeks ago. Mason Englert was sent down.
The Brewers got past the Rangers 3-1 last evening. Joey Ortiz homered. Hoby Milner opened the game, giving up a run over two innings. Bryce Wilson then followed with six shutout innings.
The Brewers welcome the Rangers again this afternoon.
After three rough outings, Milwaukee has sent starter Carlos Rodriguez back down to Nashville. Pitcher Joel Kuhnel has been brought up.
The Brewers also added some starting pitching help by purchasing the contract of pitcher Dallas Keuchel from the Mariners. Keuchel won the American League Cy Young Award in 2015, but has struggled in recent years. He had spent all of this season with Seattle’s Triple-A team in Tacoma. He could be in line to start for the Crew this afternoon.
NHL
Two former Red Wings are headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Pavel Datsyuk was named in his first year of eligibility. Datsyuk collected 914 points in 14 seasons with Detroit. He won three straight Selke trophies as the NHL’s top defensive forward, and four straight Lady Byng awards as the league’s most gentlemanly player. Colin Campbell is also headed to the Hall. Campbell finished his playing career for Detroit in the mid-’80s, then segued into a role as an assistant coach. He served four seasons as head coach of the Rangers, and was hired in 1998 as the NHL’s Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations – a role he still holds today. He’s being inducted for his front office work, along with longtime Predators executive David Poile.
Other players named to the Hall this year include Jeremy Roenick and Shea Weber, and female skaters Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl.
NBA
The first round of the NBA Draft takes place tonight. The Pistons have the fifth pick. Round two will take place tomorrow.
The Pistons have added another member to their management team. Dennis Lindsey will leave the Mavericks to join Detroit as senior vice president of basketball operations. Lindsey and new team president Trajan Langdon have worked together in the past.
