Regional Track Wins for Gremlin Boys, Lakes Girls – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet cruised to two mercy-rule victories over L’Anse. In the first game, the Copper Kings collected 11 hits in a 13-3, five-inning win. Elli Djerf, Kendra Keranen, Ally Spence and Brittany Heikkila each had two hits. Keranen drove in four runs. Djerf struck out six, and gave up just two hits and two walks. Calumet took the second game 17-5 in six innings. Ally Spence had four hits and drove in six runs. Elli Djerf, Kendra Keranen and Vera Peterson each had two hits. Molly Helminen got the win, and struck out five. Kaitlyn Voskul had two hits for the Purple Hornets.
– Houghton v Jeffers – no report.

In softball today, Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Hancock.

In high school baseball yesterday…
– Calumet swept its doubleheader against Houghton, winning the first game 21-9, and the second 10-0. Both games ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Nick Voelker threw the shutout in the nightcap.

In baseball today…
– Jeffers plays at Hancock. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 3:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet visits L’Anse.
– Houghton entertains Gogebic.

At regional track and field competitions yesterday…
– The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls dominated the D-III meet at Baraga. Chassell finished second, followed by Ontonagon. Bessemer and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for fourth, and Baraga and Ewen-Trout Creek tied for sixth, and Wakefield-Marenisco finished last. Laura Lyons of the Lakes took the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter runs, and also won the long jump. The Lakes won 12 of the 17 events. View full results here.
– Bessemer easily won the boys D-III meet. Ontonagon finished a distant second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, Ewen-Trout Creek, Wakefield-Marenisco, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Jeffers. The Speedy Speedboys took every track event. Jake Witt from Ewen-Trout Creek won the shot put and the discus throw. View full results here.
– The Houghton boys won the D-I meet at Negaunee yesterday. Negaunee finished second, followed by Westwood, Kingsford and Calumet. Houghton’s Clayton Sayen won the 100, 200 and 400-meter runs, and the 800-meter hurdles. Dante Cyrus took the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Cooper Twardzik from Calumet won the shot put and the discus throw. View full results here.
– Negaunee won the D-I girls meet. Houghton finished second, followed by Kingsford, Westwood and Calumet. Kendra Monette of the Gremlins won 100-meter run and the shot put. View full results here.
– Hancock and L’Anse compete at the DII regional in Iron Mountain today.

MLB
José Iglesias’ bases-loaded single in the eighth inning drove home two runs, as the Detroit Tigers came from behind to edge the Seattle Mariners 3-2 last night. Matthew Boyd struck out a career-best nine batters, while giving up two runs over six innings. Five relievers combined to hold the Mariners scoreless over the final three innings, with Warwick Saupold getting the win, and Shane Greene earning the save.

The Tigers continue that series at Seattle tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Félix Hernández. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin an interleague set at Minnesota tonight. Brent Suter will pitch against Kyle Gibson.

Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun has been placed on the disabled list because of back problems. A replacement will be called up today.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Tampa Bay defeated Washington 4-2. The Eastern Conference final is tied 2-2. Winnipeg skates at Las Vegas tonight. The Golden Knights lead the Western Conference final 2-1.

Guts Frisbee
Tomorrow is Keweenaw Guts Day – your chance to try your hand at Guts Frisbee. Local players will gather between noon and 4:00 at Duane Harrelson Field on US-41 in Calumet. You’re invited to learn how the game is played, and give it a go yourself. The Top Gun competition will award trophies for the fastest serves by high school players. There will be free refreshments.

The 61st Annual Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament will be held July 7th and 8th at Calumet’s Agassiz Field.
