Zach McInstry’s three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning powered the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Rockies last evening. On a “bullpen” day, five Detroit hurlers gave up a run on five hits through the first eight innings. Alex Lange pitched a scoreless ninth, then gave up a run as he closed the game out in the bottom of the 10th.
The Tigers close out that series in Colorado today. Matt Manning will start against Connor Seabold. Coverage will begin at 2:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers outslugged the Pirates 11-8 yesterday. Milwaukee built a 10-0 lead by the top of the 6th, with help from a Christian Yelich home run, and a bases-loaded Jesse Winker double. Raimel Tapia added a solo shot in the seventh. Corbin Burnes allowed two runs in the sixth, but completed seven innings to earn the win. The Pirates came back with six runs in the eighth off Clayton Andrews and Bryse Wilson. Joel Payamps tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Brewers visit the Pirates again this afternoon. Colin Rae will pitch against Rich Hill.
After blowing a save opportunity Friday, the Brewers designated struggling reliever Matt Bush for assignment yesterday. Reliever Thomas Pannone was also designated. Clayton Andrews and J.B. Bukauskas were called up from Nashville.
NHL
The Red Wings had a busy Saturday, as the NHL free agent signing window opened. They signed newly-acquired wing Klim Kostin to a two-year, $4 million deal. They bought out the contract of Kailer Yamamoto, who came to Detroit in the same deal with Edmonton as Kostin. Detroit also re-signed defenseman Gustav Lindstrom to a one-year deal.
Detroit added some goaltending depth by signing veteran free agent James Reimer to a one-year deal. He’s expected to share time with Ville Husso. The Wings also inked a two-year agreement with veteran goalie Alex Lyon, who projects as the third-stringer, and should get much net time at Grand Rapids.
Detroit signed a three-year contract with former Maple Leaf wing Justin Holl, and a one-year deal with former Kraken forward Daniel Sprong, then added former Flyers, Coyotes and Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere for one season. They capped the busy day by signing former University of Michigan and Colorado Avalanche forward J.T. Compher to a five-year, $25.5 million deal.
