In high school baseball Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Ironwood, 15-5 in five innings, and 28-1 in four innings.

College Hockey

Denver blanked Boston College 2-0 to win the NCAA Division I hockey championship Saturday night. It was the first time the Eagles had been shut out all season. Pioneers goalie Matt Davis made 35 saves – 23 in the third period – and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

NHL

The Red Wings kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Maple Leafs Saturday night. Detroit built a 4-1 lead in the first period, with single goals from David Perron and Simon Edvinsson, and two from Alex DeBrincat. Toronto tied the game with three goals in the second period. After a scoreless third frame, Dylan Larkin netted the game-winner 41 seconds into overtime.

Philadelphia and Washington won Saturday night, and Pittsburgh lost, so the win boosted the Wings into a tie with the Capitals and Flyers for the final Eastern Conference wild card playoff berth. Both Washington and Philadelphia hold tie-breaker advantages over Detroit. The Penguins are one standings point back. Philadelphia has one game remaining. Detroit, Pittsburgh and Washington each have two.

The Wings welcome the Canadiens Monday. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The sale of the Coyotes to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, and the relocation of the franchise to Salt Lake City, are expected to be approved this week by the NHL. The league has promised that current Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo will be awarded an expansion franchise, if a new arena can be built in Arizona within the next five years.

NBA

The Pistons wrap up their season at San Antonio this afternoon.

MLB

The Tigers lost both ends of their doubleheader against the Twins yesterday, 11-5 and 4-1.

The first game went 12 innings, with each team scoring once in the 11th. Minnesota plated seven runs in the top of the 12th, with help from an error by Zach McInstry at third base. Five were charged to losing pitcher Alex Lange, and two to McInstry, who moved to the mound to spell the bullpen. The late meltdown spoiled a quality start by Kenta Maeda, who gave up two runs on five hits over six innings, and left with a one-run lead. Kerry Carpenter homered for Detroit.

The Tigers collected just four hits in the nightcap. Matt Manning, brought up from Toledo as the extra player for the doubleheader, pitched into the seventh, giving up all four runs, and taking the loss.

The Tigers and Twins wrap up that set in Detroit this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start against Bailey Ober. Coverage will start at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

For the second straight game, the Brewers scored 11 runs against the Orioles, cruising to an 11-5 victory Saturday. Baltimore got off to a hot start, plating all their runs off Milwaukee starter D.L. Hall before chasing him in the fourth inning. Five Brewers relievers held the Orioles to just four hits over the duration. Milwaukee came back on the strength of homer from Rhys Hoskins and Jake Bauers, and three-hit days for Willy Adames and Brice Turang.

Those teams play in Baltimore again this afternoon. Colin Raye will pitch against former Brewer Corbin Burnes.

Christian Yelich missed yesterday’s game with back soreness. Manager Pat Murphy said Yelich would probably be held out again today, and could be headed to the injured list for a rest.
