The Detroit Tigers open their regular season at home this afternoon against the Minnesota Twins. David Price will pitch for the Tigers – the first time since 2008 that Justin Verlander hasn’t started the opening game. Phil Hughes will counter for the Twins. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Tigers officially placed reliever Bruce Rondon on the 15-day disabled list yesterday. Rondon is suffering from biceps tendinitis. Detroit has not yet placed starter Justin Verlander on the DL, although they are expected to. Verlander is dealing with a strained triceps muscle. He’s scheduled to face hitter in a throwing session tomorrow in Lakeland. If it appears he’ll be able to start next Sunday in Cleveland, Detroit will fill his roster spot with a reliever. If it appears he will not be able to pitch, they’ll call up a starter.
The Milwaukee Brewers begin their season at home against the Rockies. Kyle Lohse will start against Kyle Kendrick.
NHL – Red Wings Fall to Capitals
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Washington Capitals 2-1 Sunday. Petr Mrazek stopped 26 of 28 shots in the loss. The Wings host the Hurricanes tomorrow evening. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Detroit played without Justin Abdelkader last night. Abdelkader suffered a hand injury while blocking a shot in Saturday’s game. It’s not known how long he’ll be out. With three games remaining in the regular season, Detroit holds just a two-point lead over Ottawa for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.
NBA – Pistons Prepare for Celtics
The Detroit Pistons are off until they host the Celtics on Wednesday.
NCAA Men’s Division I Hoops Final Set
Wisconsin and Duke will meet for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Title tonight. Tip-off is at 9:18 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
