MLB – Tigers
J.D. Martinez’ eighth-inning home run lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night. Rajai Davis had tied the game with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Martinez’ 19th homer of the year – and 10th this month – made a winner of reliever Bruce Rondon, who pitched a perfect eighth inning. Joakim Soria gave up two hits in the ninth, but earned his 17th save.
The Tigers continue that home series with the Chicago White Sox this evening. Kyle Ryan will pitch against John Danks. Hear the first pitch at 4:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers scored six runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins last night. Minnesota starter Trevor May recorded just one out before leaving the contest. Kyle Lohse gave up four runs over six innings, and earned the victory. He becomes just the 14th pitcher to log victories against all 30 MLB teams. Gerardo Parra, Aramis Ramirez and Scooter Gennett homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers continue that interleague set with the Twins this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Kyle Gibson.
Red Wings Draft Russian Center
The Detroit Red Wings used the 19th pick in the NHL Amateur Draft last night to take Russian Evgeny Svechnikov. Svechnikov was recently converted from forward to center. He’s 6’2”, and is described as a very powerful skater. He played for Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season, and was that team’s third-leading scorer.
As expected, the Edmonton Oilers used the first pick to take Connor McDavid.
The draft continues today. Detroit does not have a selection in the second round.
Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk underwent surgery yesterday to repair ruptured tendons in his right ankle. Datsyuk will be on crutches for four-to-six weeks, but hopes to be ready for training camp.
