NHL – Red Wings Clinch Playoff Berth
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime last night… but still clinched a playoff appearance. Detroit led 3-2 after Darren Helm’s goal early in the third period. Tomas Plekanec beat Jimmy Howard midway through the period to tie it, and Lars Eller scored the game-winner a little more than minute into overtime. The single standings point… combined with a loss by the Bruins… was enough to lift Detroit into the postseason for the 24th straight year. The Wings wrap up their regular season at Carolina tomorrow night.
MLB – Tigers Set Record
The Detroit Tigers’ stellar starting pitching continued yesterday, as they completed a sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a rain-delayed 7-1 victory in Detroit. Shane Greene gave up just three singles over the first six innings. Minnesota finally scored an unearned run in the seventh. Anthony Gose had three hits, and J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer. The Tigers open a series at Cleveland this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start against Zach McAllister. Hear the first pitch at 4:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Tigers’ pitchers tossed 24 shutout innings before allowing their first run of the season – that’s an American League record.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and entertain the Pirates tonight. Mike Fiers will pitch against Jeff Locke.
NBA – Pistons Host Pacers
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Pacers tonight.
Finlandia
The Finlandia softball team plays two at Wisconsin-Oshkosh this afternoon. The Lions play two at Cleary University tomorrow, and two at Olivet College on Sunday.
The two Finlandia baseball games at Maranatha Bible Baptist University today have been canceled because of poor field conditions. The status of the Lions’ games at Maranatha tomorrow has not been announced.
The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association introduced its All-Academic teams yesterday. Finlandia players Jordan Marr, Brandon Passley and Scott Vargas were honored on the men’s team. Kimberly Harter from Hancock, Brock Nelsen and Jena Kosley were named to the women’s team.
Kero Scores First Pro Goal
Former Michigan Tech hockey captain Tanner Kero scored his first professional goal in his first professional game last night, as the Rockford Ice Hogs defeated the Iowa Wild 5-3. The Hancock native signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks organization last week. See video of his goal here.
NFL – Lions, Packers Announce Preseason Schedule
The Detroit Lions have released their exhibition schedule for the 2015 season. Detroit will open at home against the Jets… then visit Washington and Jacksonville… and wrap up at home against the Bills.
The Packers will open their preseason with visits to New England and Pittsburgh… and close with home games against the Eagles and Saints.
