Red Wings Add Six as NHL Draft Concludes – Sunday Sports Wrap

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings added six more players to their system, as the NHL draft concluded Saturday.
• In the second round, they chose defenseman Shai Buium with the 36th overall pick. After playing for the USHL Sioux City Musketeers last season, he’s scheduled to begin play at the University of Denver this fall.
• In the third round, they selected forward Carter Mazur, who grew up as a Red Wings fan in Jackson, Michigan, and is also headed to Denver.
• In round four, they added forward Redmond (Red) Savage, the son of former NHL player Brian Savage.
• In the fifth round, they took Swedish forward Liam Dower Nilsson, who is a teammate of first-round pick Simon Edvinsson. They also added Canadian defenseman Oscar Plandowski.
• In the sixth round, they selected Canadian forward Pasquale Zito, who played for the Windsor Spitfires two years ago, but missed last season because the Ontario Hockey League canceled its season because of COVID-19 concerns.

The Anaheim Ducks used their sixth-round pick to take forward Kyle Kukkonen, who is a Michigan Tech commit.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost to the Kansas City Royals 9-8 last night. Casey Mize tossed four scoreless innings, as the Bengals built a 6-0 lead, but faded and left the game in the fifth as KC plated four runs. The Royals blew the game open with five runs off Kyle Funhauser and Ian Krol in the seventh. Detroit scored twice in the top of the ninth to make it close, but Jeimer Candelario struck out with two runners on base to end the comeback bid. Candelario and Akil Baddoo homered for Detroit.

The Tigers visit the Royals again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Daniel Lynch. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers ripped the Chicago White Sox 5-1 yesterday. Corbin Burnes gave up a run on four hits over six innings. Kolton Wong and Tyrone Taylor homered, and Rowdy Tellez hit two out.

The Brewers host the Sox again tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Lance Lynn.
