Portage Lake Takes LL Major Crown – Sunday Sports Wrap

Little League

Portage Lake won the District 11 Little League Major Division title Saturday, with a 9-0 victory over Negaunee. The Portage Lake team did not allow a run in any of its tournament games, and advances to the state championship beginning Saturday in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Twilight League

Results from Saturday’s games at the annual Leo Durocher Memorial Tournament were not reported.

The semifinals and championship game will be played today at the Stanton field.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tonight in Milwaukee. The Suns lead the Bucks 2-0.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 9-4 to the Minnesota Twins Saturday. Homers by Niko Goodrum and Zack Short helped Detroit stake a 4-0 advantage after four innings. On a bullpen day, Kyle Funkhouser, Daniel Norris and Erasmo Ramírez kept the Twins off the board through five innings. Minnesota broke through with two runs off Ramírez in the sixth, then added three off Joe Jiménez in the seventh, and tacked on four against José Cisnero and Ian Krol in the eighth.

The Tigers visit the Twins again this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against José Berríos. Coverage begins at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Eugenio Suárez’ solo home run off Josh Hader in the top of the ninth inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Starter Freddy Peralta went five innings, giving up a three-run homer to Nick Castellanos. Tyrone Taylor homered for the Crew.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Luis Castillo.

Guts Frisbee

The 63rd Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament continues today at the Hancock Driving Park. The championship match should begin late this afternoon. The public is invited.

At the Run the Keweenaw Trails Festival Saturday…
• Justin Wilson won the 6k Mount Baldy Hill Climb, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Mark Ousdigian. Sam Kurkowski finished third overall, and was the fastest woman. See full results here.
• Wilson also dominated the Copper Harbor Trails Challenge 10k, finishing more than three minutes ahead of Lucy Westlake, who was the top woman. See full results here.

Action wraps up this morning, with the RTK Ultra 50K and the Carl Olson Memorial 25K Adventure Run. Runners from 11 states are taking part.
