Portage Lake Majors Open State Tourney with Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB
Victor Martinez hit two home runs, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-3 Friday night. Anibal Sanchez gave up three runs in the fourth inning, but recovered and pitched into the sixth to earn the win.

The Tigers continue that series at Minnesota tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Kyle Gibson. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera left last night’s game after being struck by a hard-hit ground ball. He suffered a bruised clavicle, and is considered day-to-day.

The Milwaukee Brewers suffered their sixth straight loss Friday night, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1. Philly got off to a quick start with two runs of Matt Garza in the first inning. Garza settled in, and gave up no more runs over five innings. He took the loss. The Phillies added four more in the sixth, off Carlos Torres and Rob Scahill.

The Brewers play in Philadelphia again tonight. Brent Suter will pitch against Jeremy Hellickson.

Little League
The Portage Lake Majors opened the state Little League baseball tournament Friday with a 4-0 victory over White Lake. Portage Lake will face Bay City Northwest this morning at 9:00, and Birmingham tomorrow at 3:00, as pool play continues in Gladstone.

American Legion Baseball
The Copper Country Flames earned two victories Friday at the American Legion baseball tournament being held at the Hancock Driving Park. The first was a 5-4 win over the Marquette Blues in a game that had been suspended because of darkness Thursday evening. In the twilight Friday, the Flames opened a 7-2 lead over the Menominee Red Wave, and held on to win 7-6. The Flames will face Gladstone in the winner’s bracket finale this afternoon at 2:00.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings and forward Tomáš Tatar have agreed on a new four-year contract. The deal was inked before the decision from their recent arbitration hearing was announced. It’s worth 5.3-million dollars per season. Tatar has been the Wings’ leading score over the past three seasons. He would have become a free agent next summer.
