Little League
The Portage Lake Little League has canceled its summer season. The announcement yesterday noted that COVID-19 restrictions have not yet been relaxed enough to permit play. With no guarantee that restrictions will be eased further in the near future, league officials said they did not feel that sign-ups could proceed. The Baraga County Little League canceled its season a few weeks ago. Keweenaw Little League has suspended operations, but has made no official announcement about its season.
ORV
The main ORV route to Copper Harbor will be closed for six weeks, beginning Monday. The stretch of the B Trail between Phoenix and Central will be blocked off because of logging in the area. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources manages the trail, which is located on privately-owned property. DNR officials say no alternate route is available.
NHL
Jeff Blashill will return as coach of the Detroit Red Wings next season. Team general manager Steve Yzerman confirmed the news yesterday. The Wings finished dead last in the National Hockey League this season, and will not be part of the playoff field when action resumes this summer. It’s the fourth straight season in which the team has missed the playoffs. Yzerman said the primary emphasis next season will be on the continued development of young players.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons are looking for a general manager. The team has been without a GM since Jeff Bower was fired two years ago. At that time, owner Tom Gores hired Ed Stefanski as a senior advisor. Stefanski has run the team ever since. The new GM will report to him.
