Tigers Lose Twice to Indians
Drew VerHagen pitched four shutout innings in his major league debut… but the Cleveland batters figured him out in the fifth, and beat the Tigers 6-2 in the first of two games yesterday. VerHagen struck out four of the first six batters he faced. Cleveland ended his day by scoring three runs in the fifth.

In the nightcap, the Indians scored three runs off Joe Nathan in the top of the ninth to take a 5-2 victory.

The two Cleveland wins move them past the Royals into second place in the American League Central Division. Detroit’s lead is four-and-a-half games.

The Tigers will try to salvage the final game of the series this afternoon. Drew Smyly will face Josh Tomlin. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Nats Score Early, Cruise Past Brewers
The Nationals scored five runs in the first inning, and beat the Brewers 8-3. Matt Garza faced eight batters, and gave up all five runs on five hits and two walks.

The Brewers wrap up that series at Washington this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will start against Gio Gonzalez.

The Cardinals won, so Milwaukee falls back into a tie with Saint Louis for first place in the National League Central.

PL 9-10 Boys Take District Title

The Portage Lake Little League 9-10 boys defeated Negaunee 12-2 on Friday, and 12-2 on Saturday to win their district title. They advance to the state tournament.

The junior team split their two games against Kingsford Saturday… winning the first game 14-11, but dropping the second 12-4. That series will be decided with a third game today in Norway. The winner will advance.

The Baraga County 11-12 girls softball team was eliminated from the tournament Friday with 11-1 and 10-2 losses to Escanaba.

Janeshek Claims Another Canal Run Win
Canal Run LogoAndrew Lund of Calumet won the half-marathon at the Portage Canal Run Saturday, with a time of 1:26:02.7. Daisuke Minakata of Houghton placed second… more than two-and-a-half minutes off the pace. Matt Wong from Houghton came in two seconds later to clinch third place. Christina Carradine from Marquette was the top women’s finisher. 153 runners finished the half-marathon.

Andrew Brian from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, took the 10-mile run, with a time of 1:01:45.4. Paul Lyle of Chassell was a little more than two minutes back in second place, and Ryan Towles of Dollar Bay placed third. Hancock’s Amy Janeshek was the top women’s finisher again this year. 94 runners finished the 10-mile race.

Jacob Colling from Chassell won the five-mile run… a minute ahead of Tim Dunstan of Dollar Bay. Mark Hallman from Amasa placed third. Lisa Wiitala from Hancock was the top women’s finisher. 294 runners finished the five-mile event.

Chris Sochay from Calumet won the 10-mile walk, with a time of 1:57:25. Sandy Houle from Dollar Bay was the top women’s finisher, and second overall. 56 walkers completed the 10-mile event. Steven Dunstan of Dollar Bay nosed out Colleen Lemler of Calumet to win the five-mile walk, with a time of 1:02:47. Lemler was a tenth of a second off the pace. 162 walkers finished the five-mile stroll.
