Adam Eaton’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Chicago White Sox a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday, as the two teams completed the game that had been suspended because of rain Saturday night. Detroit had tied the score at three per team in the eighth inning Saturday. The contest resumed yesterday in the ninth. After Detroit failed to score in the top of the inning, former Tiger Avisail Garcia led off the bottom of the inning with a single off Justin Wilson. He stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on Eaton’s base hit.
Detroit then suffered a 5-4 walk-off loss in yesterday’s regularly scheduled game. After the Sox scored four runs in the first two innings off Anibal Sanchez, the Tigers came back with one in the eighth on a solo home run by Andrew Romine, and three in the ninth on a lead-off homer by Nick Castellanos, and two-out solo shots by Tyler Collins and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. In the bottom of the ninth, Bruce Rondon walked Adam Eaton, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the winning run on a single by Melky Cabrera.
The Tigers open a three-game set at Boston tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Drew Pomeranz. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit pitcher Jordan Zimmermann pitched four scoreless inning in a rehab start for the Toledo Mud Hens yesterday. Zimmermann may be given another rehab start before he returns from a stint on the disabled list because of a strained neck muscle.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell 6-5 to the Chicago Cubs yesterday. The Crew scored twice in the first, and twice more in the fifth, while Junior Guerra was pitching shutout ball. Guerra faltered in the sixth, and gave up one run. He got the first out in the seventh, and gave way to Will Smith. Smith and Tyler Thornburg proceeded to give up five runs. Milwaukee scored one more in the ninth, but couldn’t close the gap.
The Brewers host the Diamondbacks for four games beginning tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Braden Shipley, who is making his major league debut.
Little League
The Portage Lake Minor League baseball team finished pool play at the state tournament in Midland without a win over the weekend. The Minors fell 12-2 to Union Township yesterday. On Saturday, they dropped a 10-0 decision to Southwest Jackson. They lost to Grosse Pointe Farms 7-6 in their first pool game on Friday.
The Portage Lake Major League baseball team opened pool play in the state tournament at Tecumseh with a 12-1 loss to Lincoln Park North Saturday morning. The result of yesterday’s game against Tecumseh was not available. The Majors are scheduled to face Grosse Pointe Woods South this morning at 10:30.
NFL
NFL players are reporting to training camps to begin preparation for the 2016 season. Detroit Lions rookies checked in at the team’s facility in Allen Park on Saturday. Veterans don’t need to be there until Thursday. Detroit has placed tight end Brandon Pettigrew, receiver Corey Fuller and offensive tackle Corey Robinson on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List.
All Green Bay Packers players will open camp at St. Norbert College today.
