The Detroit Tigers broke open a close game in the late innings, and defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-6. The Tigers snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh. Matthew Boyd left the game in the bottom of the seventh with a 4-3 lead. Detroit tacked on two runs in the eighth, and three in the ninth. Minnesota scored two in the eighth, and one in the ninth, before Justin Wilson could close out the win. José Iglesias homered and drove in three runs for Detroit.
The Tigers return home to host the Kansas City Royals tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Jason Hammel. Pregame coverage begins at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tigers’ pitcher Daniel Norris left a rehab start with the Toledo Mud Hens in the first inning yesterday with tightness in a quad muscle. He’ll be evaluated today. Norris has been on the disabled list, recovering from a groin strain.
The Tigers sent outfielder Jim Adduci down to Toledo yesterday, and called up pitcher Drew VerHagen.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 yesterday. Junior Guerra took the loss. He gave up two runs in the fourth inning, and was charged with three more after Michael Blazek relieved him with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth, and all three runners eventually scored.
The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight games. They’ll take today off, and open a series at Washington tomorrow night. Zach Davies will pitch against Edwin Jackson.
Pitcher Wily Peralta rejoined the Brewers yesterday, after spending a month on the disabled list. Rob Scahill was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.
Little League
The Portage Lake Majors were eliminated from the state Little League tournament yesterday, with a 17-7 loss to Birmingham. Portage Lake dropped a 10-2 decision to Bay City Northwest Saturday morning, after opening pool play Friday with a 4-0 victory over White Lake. Their 1-2 record was not good enough to advance to today’s quarterfinals.
American Legion Baseball
The Copper Country Flames are heading to the American Legion state baseball tournament. At the Region Five qualifying tourney at the Hancock Driving Park over the weekend, the Flames edged the Marquette Blues 5-4, and got past Menominee 7-6. They fell to Gladstone 16-8 in the championship game on Saturday. Yesterday, they defeated Menominee again, 6-4, and earned the second seed among the three teams from our region that will play in the state tournament this coming weekend in Gladwin.
