PL 9-10’s Open State Tourney Play – Friday Sports Wrap

Tigers Defeat Angels
Max Scherzer struck out 11, as the Tigers beat the Angels 6-4 last night. Scherzer went seven innings, to earn his 12th victory of the season. His only rough spot was the fifth… when he gave up three runs. Detroit responded with three runs in the sixth… powered by rbi doubles from Torii Hunter and Nick Castellanos. Joe Nathan struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 21st save.

The Tigers continue set against the Angels in Los Angeles tonight. Drew Smyly will start against Tyler Skaggs. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Cleveland lost, and Kansas City won… so Detroit now leads the Royals by seven games in the American League Central Division. The Indians are seven-and-a-half back.

Brewers Pound Mets
The Brewers scored four runs in the second inning, and cruised past the Mets 9-1 last evening. Khris Davis, Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy homered for Milwaukee. Matt Garza gave up just a run on two hits over eight innings to earn the win.

The Brewers host the Mets again tonight. Yovani Gallardo will start against Zack Wheeler.

Saint Louis lost, and Pittsburgh won… so Milwaukee leads both of those teams by three games in the National League Central Division.

– At the Dollar Bay field, Blue Sky Health won a 3-0 pitchers duel over Wolverine-Orbit.

Portage Lake 9-10Portage Lake 9-10 Team Opens State Tourney Play Today
The Portage Lake Little League 9-10 team opens pool play in the state tournament today in Grand Rapids. They’ll face Lincoln Park West at 3:00… then take on Roosevelt Park tomorrow at 2:30… and the South Portage team from the Kalamazoo area Sunday at noon. The top two teams from each of the four pools advance to the quarterfinals on Monday. You can follow the progress of the tournament here.

Hancock Hockey Golf Fundraiser Tomorrow
Hancock Athletics LogoThere’s still time to sign up for the Hancock Hockey team golf fundraiser tomorrow at the Calumet Golf Club. Tee times start at 10:00 and run through 12:30. It’s a three-person scramble. The cost is $40 per player, which include 18 holes of golf, and refreshments. Money raised will help to defray some of the team’s costs for the upcoming season.  Call 337-3911 to reserve your tee time.
