PL 9-10’s Fall in First State Tourney Game – Saturday Sports Wrap

Tigers Fall to Angels
Drew Smyly struck out 11 batters… but the Tigers fell to the Angels 2-1 last night. Los Angeles finally figured Smyly out in the sixth, and broke through for two runs. Al Alburquerque and Blaine Hardy pitched scoreless relief to keep it close. Detroit’s only run came on a Miguel Cabrera homer.

The Tigers continue set against the Angels in Los Angeles tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Matt Shoemaker. Hear the first pitch at 9:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Kansas City won… so Detroit now leads the Royals by six games in the American League Central Division. The Indians lost, and remain are seven-and-a-half back.

Brewers Lose Late to Mets
Yovani Gallardo pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning… but the Mets scored three runs off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, and beat the Brewers 3-2. Gallardo gave up just four singles, and struck out eight.

The Brewers host the Mets again tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Jon Niese.

Saint Louis and Pittsburgh also lost… so Milwaukee continues to lead both of those teams by three games in the National League Central Division.

Portage Lake 9-10Portage Lake 9-10 Team Falls in First State Tourney Game
The Portage Lake Little League 9-10 team opened pool play in the state tournament Friday in Grand Rapids with an 8-2 loss to Lincoln Park North. Portage Lake will take on Roosevelt Park this afternoon at 2:30… and the South Portage team from the Kalamazoo area tomorrow at noon. The top two teams from each of the four pools advance to the quarterfinals on Monday. You can follow the progress of the tournament here.
