Pistons Open Season with Win – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball tonight…
– Hancock plays at Houghton for the Copper Spike.
– Jeffers visits Lake Linden-Hubbell
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City travels to Watersmeet.
– L’Anse welcomes West Iron County.
– Baraga journeys to Bessemer.
– Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Wakefield-Marenisco.

Because of the Copper Spike volleyball game, tonight’s Houghton junior varsity football kickoff time has been moved up to 5:00.

Ontonagon and Hancock reign as champions of the Dennis Massoglia Memorial 8th Grade Girls Championship Tournament…
– Hancock took the Division One title by defeating Baraga 38-19. Isabella Hebert scored 18 for the Bulldogs, and  Cori Jahfetson led the Vikings with eight points. Hancock concludes an undefeated season.
– Ontonagon defeated Chassell 47-32 to take the Division Two crown. Lilly McIntyre led the Gladiators with 14 points. Shannon Torola scored 12 for the Panthers.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers find themselves on the brink of elimination in the National League Championship Series, following yesterday’s 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. L-A ace Clayton Kershaw gave up just three hits and a run over seven innings. Milwaukee starter Wade Miley faced just one batter, and was replaced by Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff pitched into the sixth, and was charged with three runs. Joaquin Soria was charged with the other two in the seventh. The Dodgers lead the series three games to two. Game six will be played in Milwaukee tomorrow night.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Houston Astros 8-6 in the American League Championship Series yesterday. The Sox lead that set three games to one, with game five scheduled for tonight in Houston.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons opened their season with a gritty 103-100 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers last night. Blake Griffin led Detroit with 26 points. Andre Drummond grabbed 20 rebounds. Detroit played without starters Stanley Johnson and Reggie Bullock. Johnson has a toe injury that he suffered during the preseason, and Bullock was ill. The Pistons will visit the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Tampa Bay tonight. Because of NFL football, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
In tonight’s NFL game, the Denver Broncos visit the Arizona Cardinals. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. Please have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.

The Miami Dolphins say starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill will miss Sunday’s game because of his shoulder injury. Brock Osweiler will start against the Detroit Lions.
