The Finlandia University men’s soccer team lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 5-1 last night. All of the scoring came in the second half.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team will face Northern Michigan University in an exhibition game tonight at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee.

The GLIAC basketball coaches think the Michigan Tech men’s hoops team is in for a tough season. The Huskies have reached the NCAA tournament the past three seasons. Yesterday, they were picked to finish seventh in the North Division… just ahead of last place Northern Michigan. No Huskies were named to the preseason All-Conference Team. The Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Hancock native Tanner Kero admits he wasn’t expecting to be called up to the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks this week. The former Michigan Tech captain will be with the Hawks tonight when they visit the Winnipeg Jets. WGN Radio in Chicago broadcasts Blackhawks games. You can often pick them up on AM 720 at night in the Copper Country.

The Detroit Pistons edged the Utah Jazz 92-87 last night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 19 points. Andre Drummond added 18 and grabbed 10 rebounds. The 2-0 start puts Detroit two games over .500 for the first time in nearly six years. The Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night.

Backup point guard Jodie Meeks broke his foot in last night’s game. It’s not yet known how much time he’ll miss.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals took a two games to none lead in the World Series by beating the New York Mets 7-1 last night. Game three of the Fall Classic will be played tomorrow night in New York.

MLB.com is reporting that Mitch Dubee will be the next pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers. Dubee was the pitching coach for the Philadelphia Phillies when they won the World Series in 2008. The team has not confirmed the hiring.

NFL

Copper Country Ski Tigers LogoSkiers will have a chance to buy and sell equipment at two events on Saturday. For Nordic skiers, the annual Copper Country Ski Tigers Ski Swap will be held at Houghton High School between 10:00 and noon. Items for sale may be dropped off Saturday between 8:00 and 9:45 the morning of the sale. Ski Tigers sign-up will also be held at that time.

Mont Ripley(2)For downhill skiers, the Mont Ripley Racing Team will hold its annual ski swap at Mont Ripley between 11:00 and 2:00. Equipment for sale may be dropped off tomorrow evening between 6:00 and 8:00, and Saturday morning between 9:00 and 10:00.

The high school football playoffs open tomorrow evening, when Calumet visits Negaunee. On Saturday afternoon, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Forest Park. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
