The Calumet High School volleyball team meets Rudyard in the state tournament regional final tonight. The match begins at 5:30 at Gladstone.

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost to Northland College 4-3 last night. Alena Fiala had a goal and an assist for the Lions. Jayden Draney and Sierra Meiners also scored. Anna Smiddy took the loss in net.

The Detroit Pistons lost their second-straight game last night, falling 107-100 to the Phoenix Suns. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 27 points, and held Phoenix star Devin Booker to just 11. The rest of the Pistons struggled offensively – the point guard combination of Ish Smith and Beno Udrih found the net just three times. The Pistons play at San Antonio tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 8:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Tigers’ pitcher Michael Fulmer has picked up a couple of awards. He was named Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sportscasters Association yesterday, and then won the MLB Players Association’s Players Choice Award for the American League’s Outstanding Rookie. The Sporting News gave Fulmer its AL Rookie of the Year honor last week. He’s also a finalist for the Baseball Writers Association American League Rookie of the Year Award, which will be announced next week.

This Saturday is Try Hockey for Free Day, a national effort to introduce kids to the sport organized by USA Hockey. Our local event will begin at 10:15 at the Houghton County Arena, and is sponsored by the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association. Boys and girls ages four through nine are welcome.
