Pistons Face Elimination After Loss – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-91 Friday night. The Pistons trailed by just one point at halftime, but the Cavaliers slowly pulled ahead in the second half. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 18 points.  Cleveland leads that best-of-seven opening round series three games to none, and could eliminate Detroit with a win Sunday night in Auburn Hills. Pregame coverage begins at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cleveland Indians Friday night. Justin Verlander struck out 10 over seven innings. He gave up just four hits, but one was a leadoff home run to Carlos Santana. Another was Marlon Byrd’s seventh-inning shot that became the game-winner. Detroit’s only score came when Justin Upton doubled home Ian Kinsler in the sixth inning.

The Tigers continue that home set against Cleveland this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against Corey Kluber. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Friday. Zach Davies gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers continue that home series against the Phillies tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Charlie Morton.

The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team entertains Wayne State this morning, and Northwood tomorrow.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team split a doubleheader at North Central University Friday afternoon. The Lions lost the opener 9-6. Joey Krug drove in two runs. Finlandia won the second game 10-7. Seth Ensor homered and drove in three runs. Patrick Coles also drove in three runs, and Luke Paul had three hits. The Lions host North Central for two games today.

The Finlandia softball team was scheduled to host Martin Luther College and Northland College this weekend, but the games were canceled because of poor field conditions. Those games will not be made up. The Lions finish their season with a 5-19 record.

In baseball Friday…
– Houghton and Jeffers split a doubleheader. The Gremlins won the first game 1-0. Cole Jepson struck out 10 to get the win. Bryce Turner took a tough loss, giving up just one hit while striking out seven. The Jets came back to take the nightcap 2-1. Carson Turner pitched a two-hitter for the win. He struck out eight, and also drove in one of Jeffers’ runs. Alan Jurmu gave up just three hits, but took the loss for Houghton. The game ended when a Gremlins runner as cut down at the plate while trying to score the tying run.

Sisu Shuffle
The UP Health System-Portage Sisu Shuffle will be held today at 11:00 at the Portage campus in Hancock. It’s a 5k fun run/walk that’s designed for the entire family. There is no charge, but you do need to register. You can do that onsite beginning around 10:30 tomorrow morning.
