Pioneers, Wolverines Advance in GLHL Tourney – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Negaunee and Ishpeming dominated the U.P. Girls Basketball awards, which were announced Friday by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Ell Mason of the Miners was named “Ms U.P. Basketball,” and Division 1-3 Player of the Year. Negaunee coach Mike O’Donnell was honored as Coach of the Year. Jenna Maki of the Hematites was named Division Four Player of the Year, and Ishpeming’s Ryan Reichel Coach of the Year.

GLHL

On the opening day of the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament in Fond du Lac yesterday, the Portage Lake Pioneers dismantled the Marquette Mutineers 10-1. The Calumet Wolverines slipped past the Eagle River Falcons 5-4. Aksel Loukus made 62 saves. That set up a meeting between Portage Lake and Calumet. The Pioneers opened up an early 4-0 lead, and cruised to a 6-1 victory.

The Pioneers remain in the winners bracket, and await today’s action before finding out whom their semifinal opponent in tonight’s game will be. The Wolverines drop into the loser’s bracket, and will play an elimination game against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs today at noon Eastern Time.

Local Hockey

The annual Northern Lights hockey game between the Michigan Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club and the Minnesota Warriors will be played tonight. The contest is a fundraiser for Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw. The MTU Pep Band will be on hand. Tickets are five dollars for adults. First responders, law enforcement, veterans and children age 12 and under can attend for free. Face-off is at 7:00 at Dee Stadium.

College Basketball

South Carolina and Iowa will play for the NCAA Division One women’s basketball tournament championship. The Gamecocks eliminated North Carolina State 78-59 in one semifinal last evening. Iowa overcame a cold first half to shade Connecticut 71-69 in the other. The title game will be played tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.

The men’s semifinals will be played tonight. North Carolina State and Purdue will tip off at 6:09. Alabama and Connecticut will play at 8:49.

NHL

The Red Wings’ playoff hopes suffered a blow last night, with a 4-3 loss to the Rangers. Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon stopped 34 shots.

The Wings host the Sabres tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Washington and Philadelphia also lost, so the Wings and the Capitals remain one standings point behind the Flyers in the race for the final Eastern Conference wild card playoff berth. Pittsburgh is two points back. The Wings, Caps and Penguins have six regular-season games remaining. The Flyers have five.

NBA

The Pistons dropped a 108-90 decision to the Grizzlies this evening. Again playing without Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey led the team with 31 points. Jalen Duren scored 17, and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Nets tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers celebrated their home opener with a 5-4 victory over the Athletics yesterday. Detroit plated three runs in the fourth inning, on a solo home run by Matt Vierling, an RBI double by Spencer Torkelson, and an RBI single by Riley Greene. They added another on Mark Canha’s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. Tarik Skubal turned in five scoreless innings, but gave up two runs in the sixth, and left as the A’s tied the game in the top of the seventh. Gio Urshela’s two-out double in the bottom of the eighth drove home Torkelson with the winning run.

The Tigers host the Athletics again today. Kenta Maeda will pitch against Paul Blackburn. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

William Contreras drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, to give the Brewers a 6-5 win over the Mariners last evening. The gift run came after Seattle had tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth. Willy Adames, Oliver Dunn and Christian Yelich homered for the Crew.

The Brewers welcome the Mariners again tonight. D.L. Hall will start against Bryce Miller.
