Pioneers Win GLHL Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

– Cale Markham scored the first goal of the game, then set up Reid Pietila’s game-tying goal five minutes into the third period, and the Houghton wound up in a 3-3 tie with Traverse City Central Friday night. The Trojans were led by Senior Jordan Mitchell, who scored two goals and assisted on the third.
– Dylan Boberg’s goal gave Calumet a 1-0 lead after the first period, but Cranbrook Kingswood dominated the rest of the game, and skated to a 5-1 victory.
– Jeffers fell to Kingsford 7-2.

Brock Maschmeyer’s second goal of the game, late in the third period, salvaged a 5-5 tie for the Northern Michigan hockey team against Bowling Green. The 19th-ranked Wildcats entertain the Falcons again tonight.

Both NMU basketball teams will play at Malone today.

Finlandia Hockey Teams Fall
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 4-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night. Justin Scott’s power play goal in the second period was the only score for the Lions. Finlandia skates at CUW again this afternoon.

Lake Forest College scored three goals in the first period, and pulled away to a 7-3 victory over the Finlandia women’s hockey team Friday night. The Foresters outshot the Lions 44-15. Jena Kosley, Lindsey Jackman and Brock Nelsen scored for Finlandia, and Theresa Wolf had two assists. The Lions play at Lake Forest again this afternoon.

Both Finlandia hoops teams entertain Northland College this evening. The women’s game starts at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

The Portage Lake Pioneers opened a three-goal lead after the first period, and began their Great Lakes Hockey League season with a 7-3 victory over the Calumet Wolverines Friday night. Those teams play again this evening. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for New York
The Red Wings host the Rangers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Host Philly Tonight
The Pistons entertain the 76ers tonight.

NFL – Lions Welcome Bucs
Tomorrow, the Lions host the Buccaneers. Nick Fairley’s knee injury will keep him out of the game, but running back Reggie Bush should be available. He’s missed the last three contests because of ankle and back problems. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers welcome the Falcons in the Monday night game.

MLB – Tigers Trade for Starter
The Detroit Tigers have acquired left-handed starting pitcher Shane Greene fromt the Yankees in a three-team trade. Detroit sent left-hander Robbie Ray, who was acquired in the Doug Fister deal, and infield prospect Domingo Leyba to Arizona. The Diamondbacks sent shortstop Didi Gregorius to the Yankees.

Greene is 26 years old. He went 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 starts in 2014. Two of his wins came against Detroit, including a fine performance in August when he shut out the Tigers on five hits over eight innings.
