The Portage Lake Pioneers advanced to the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament championship game with a 5-3 victory over the top-seeded West Bend Bombers Saturday night. West Bend dominated the first period, but only scored once in the closing seconds, as Portage goalie Mike Madosh stopped numerous breakaways and second chances. Ted Pietila scored twice in the second period, and Cody Sivonen added a goal to bring the Pioneers into a 3-3 tie heading into the final stanza. Portage Lake outshot West Bend 16-7 in the third period. Jay Pietila netted the game-winner eight minutes in, and Peter Rouleau tacked on an insurance goal a minute later. Madosh finished with 30 saves.
The Pioneers will face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs in the championship game this afternoon at 2:30. Our pregame coverage will start around 2:15 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The game will be a rematch of the opening contest in pool play on Friday, which the Ice Dogs won 4-2.
As pool play closed Saturday, the Ice Dogs eliminated the Calumet Wolverines 7-1.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night, with a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mike Green had a goal and an assist, and Jimmy Howard stopped 32 shots in net. The victory moved Detroit past Boston, and into third place in the Atlantic Division. The Wing have three more regular-season games remaining, and the Bruins have four. The top three teams from the Division make the playoffs. The Wings remain tied with Philadelphia for the final wild card playoff position in the Eastern Conference, although the Flyers have five regular-season games remaining. The Wings will host the Flyers Wednesday night. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons boosted their playoff hopes with a 94-90 win over the Chicago Bulls Saturday evening. Reggie Jackson scored 22 points, including four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win. Tobias Harris added 21. The Pacers also won, so Detroit continues to hold seventh place in the Eastern Conference, with a half-game margin over eighth-place Indiana. The top eight teams make the playoffs. Chicago is in ninth place, two games behind the Pacers. The Pistons will play at Miami Tuesday night. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team defeated Findlay 6-3 on Saturday. The Huskies host Hillsdale this morning at 10:00.
NCAA
Villanova and North Carolina will play for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title. In the semifinals Saturday night, the Wildcats mauled Oklahoma 95-51. The Tar Heels dispatched Syracuse 83-66. Hear the championship game tomorrow evening on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The women’s Division I semifinals will be played tonight. Connecticut meets Oregon State at 6:00, and Syracuse faces Washington at 8:30. Our coverage will begin at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
In spring training baseball Saturday, the Detroit Tigers’ final Grapefruit League game against Atlanta was rained out. Detroit opens the regular season Tuesday at Miami.
The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up their spring schedule with a 7-4 exhibition victory over their AA team, the Biloxi Shuckers. Milwaukee begins the regular season Monday at home against the Giants.
The Brewers made some late roster moves Saturday. They signed reliever Carlos Torres, who pitched the past three seasons for the Mets. He opted out of a minor-league deal with Atlanta. Milwaukee also placed reliever Corey Knebel on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. They optioned pitcher Tyler Cravy to Triple-A Colorado Springs, and told non-roster outfielder Alex Presley that he would not make the opening-day roster.
