Pioneers Fall in GLHL Tourney Final – Monday Sports Wrap

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell 4-0 to the host Fond du Lac Bears in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament championship match yesterday. The Pioneers finish as regular-season champs, and tourney runners-up. The Gibson Cup tournament between Portage Lake and the Calumet Wolverines begins Thursday, with coverage on KBear 102.3.

College Basketball

South Carolina completed a perfect season with an 87-75 victory over Iowa in the NCAA Division One women’s basketball tournament championship game yesterday.

Purdue and Connecticut will play for the Division I men’s basketball title this evening at 9:20 in Phoenix.

NHL

The Red Wings scored three goals in the opening eight minutes, then held on to defeat the Sabres 3-1 yesterday. Lucas Raymond found the net just 53 seconds into the game, and Patrick Kane and Dylan Larkin added goals shortly thereafter. Alex Lyon made 37 saves.

The win moved Detroit into the second wild card position in the Eastern Conference, with a slim one standings point lead over Pittsburgh, Washington and Philadelphia. The Wings, Penguins and Capitals each have five regular-season games remaining. The Flyers have four.

The Wings entertain the Capitals tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the 76ers tomorrow night.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Athletics 8-1 yesterday. Riley Greene’s homer in the eighth provided Detroit’s only run. Jack Flaherty gave up five runs over the first two innings, but just one more as he pitched through the sixth.

The Tigers visit the Pirates tonight. Reese Olson will start against Mitch Keller. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers scored six runs over the first two innings, and routed the Mariners 12-4 yesterday. William Contreras had four hits, including two home runs. Willy Adames also went deep. Colin Rea allowed two runs over six innings.

The Brewers visit the Reds this evening. Aaron Ashby will pitch against Graham Ashcraft.
