Pioneers Fall in GLHL Tourney Final – Monday Sports Wrap

The Mosinee Papermakers reign as champions of the Great Lakes Hockey League this season. The Makers outscored the Portage Lake Pioneers 6-1 in the title match yesterday afternoon at the Colosseum. The Pioneers had advanced to the semifinals by edging the Calumet Wolverines 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals.

Friday:
Game 1 – 10:30 – Fond du Lac pounded De Pere 12-1.
Game 2 – 11:00 – Portage Lake blasted Marquette 10-2.
Game 3 – 1:30 – Eagle River defeated Calumet 4-2.
Game 4 – 2:00 – Mosinee got past Fox Cities 5-4.
Game 5 – 8:00 – Fond du Lac downed Eagle River 6-2.
Game 6 – 10:30 – Portage Lake edged Mosinee 7-6 in overtime.

Saturday:
Game 7 – 9:00 – Calumet edged De Pere 5-4 in overtime.
Game 8 – 11:30 – Marquette defeated Fox Cities 6-3.
Game 9 – 2:00 – Calumet downed Eagle River 6-2.
Game 10 – 4:30 – Mosinee dispatched Marquette 9-5
Game 11 – 7:00 – Portage Lake slipped past Calumet 4-3 in overtime.
Game 12 – 10:00 – Mosinee shaded Fond du Lac 4-3.

Championship game yesterday:
Game 13 – Mosinee defeated Portage Lake 6-1.

High School Hockey

Houghton High School hockey standout Camden Markham has been named this year’s “Mr. Hockey” by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association. Markham compiled 38 goals and 45 assists for 83 points in just 29 games, as the Gremlins lost just twice, and finished as state Division Three runners-up.

Gremlins coach Corey Markham, Camden’s father, was named Coach of the Year.

Braden Pietila, Hartland, defenseman
Kyle Barbour, Flint Powers, defenseman

NHL

Dylan Larkin’s hat trick powered the Red Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Maple Leafs last night. Olli Maatta and Jonatan Berggren also scored for Detroit, and Alex Nedeljkovic sparkled in net, making 41 saves.

The Wings skate at Montreal tomorrow.

College Basketball

LSU won the NCAA Division I women’s basketball title, with a convincing 102-85 victory over Iowa yesterday.

San Diego State and Connecticut will play for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title tonight at 9:20.

NBA

The Pistons’ struggles continued with a 128-102 loss to the Magic last evening. Killian Hayes scored 20 for Detroit.

The Pistons have lost 23 of their last 25 games, and host the Heat tomorrow night.

MLB

The Tigers dropped a 5-1 decision to the Rays yesterday. Jake Rogers’ ninth-inning homer was one of just two Detroit hits. Joey Wentz gave up a run in the fourth, and was charged with two of the three runs Tampa Bay scored in the sixth.

The Tigers visit the Astros tonight. Matthew Boyd will face Hunter Brown. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers outslugged the Cubs 9-5 yesterday. Jesse Winker had two hits and drove in three runs. Eric Lauer earned the win, pitching into the sixth, and giving up two runs on five hits.

Milwaukee celebrates their home opener today against the Mets. Freddy Peralta will start against Carlos Carrasco.

Upcoming Local Sports Broadcasts

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines play for the historic Gibson Cup this weekend. Game One will be Friday at the Colosseum. Game two will be Saturday at Dee Stadium, with game three next Wednesday, if needed. All games will start at 7:30, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.
