Pioneers Down Wolverines in Hockeyville Tune-Up

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17).
– Houghton downed L’Anse 3-1.
– Hancock v West Iron County – no report.
– Jeffers swept Baraga 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19).
– Chassell v Ewen-Trout Creek – no report.
– Ontonagon v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

In volleyball today, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team blanked Northern Michigan University 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-23) last night. The Huskies took the first set easily, but claimed the final two by two points each. Olivia Ghormley led the Huskies with 11 kills.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers built an early lead, then held off the Calumet Wolverines 5-3 in last night’s Kraft Hockeyville USA exhibition contest. Russell Daavittila and Cody Sivonen scored the the Pioneers in the first period, with Matt Mantta and Reid Pietila adding tallies in the second. The Wolverines rallied in the third period, with goals by Ed Beiring, Josh Harju and Jim Brey, but Austin Riipi added an insurance goal for Portage Lake to help assure the win. Dawson Kero made 17 saves in net for the Pioneers.

Paid attendance was 950 for the warm-up contest ahead of tomorrow’s Hockeyville headline matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and the Saint Louis Blues.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 4-2 to the Minnesota Twins last night. Spencer Turnbull pitched six scoreless innings, but left as Minnesota scored four times in the seventh.

The Tigers host the Twins again tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against Randy Dobnak. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers’ late-season surge continued with a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Ryan Braun homered.

The Brewers continue that series in Cincinnati this evening. Jordan Lyles will start against Tyler Mahle. Milwaukee can clinch a wild card playoff berth with one more victory.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Pittsburgh Penguins for a preseason contest tonight.

The Detroit Red Wings face the Saint Louis Blues tomorrow at the Colosseum in the Kraft Hockeyville game. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3, with an extended pregame show beginning at 6:00.
