College Hockey

Michigan Tech hockey coach Joe Shawhan has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given each year to the top coach in NCAA Division I. Shawhan is one of eight finalists. The winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Former Michigan Tech defenseman Chris Lipe has signed a contract with the Iowa Heartlanders in the ECHL. Lipe joins former Huskies Alec Broetzman and Tommy Parrottino in Iowa.

NHL

The Red Wings offense found its footing, as Detroit outscored the Penguins 7-4 last night. David Perron had a hat trick, and Jonatan Berggren, Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Larkin each scored once. Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves.

Milwaukee opens the regular season tomorrow against the Cubs in Chicago. Corbin Burnes will start against Marcus Stroman.

Keston Hiura remains in the Brewers organization. The former first-round draft pick cleared waivers yesterday, and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville.

The Tigers will open the regular season tomorrow afternoon at Tampa Bay. Eduardo Rodriguez will face Shane McClanahan. Coverage will begin at 2:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
