Tigers Clinch Playoff Berth
The Tigers will be in the playoffs next week. What their playoff position will be remains up in the air, but they clinched at least the second wild card berth yesterday with a 6-1 victory over the White Sox, and Seattle’s loss to Toronto.
Justin Verlander did his part yesterday, holding the White Sox to one run over eight innings. Chicago starter Chris Sale had struck out 10 Tigers, and was working on a shutout until he plunked Victor Martinez with a pitch in the sixth inning. The benches cleared. Once order was restored, Victor moved to third on J.D. Martinez’ double, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Castellanos to tie the game. Chicago manager Robin Ventura pulled Sale out of the game at the end of the inning, and Detroit scored twice in the seventh, and three times in the eighth, to put the game away.
The Tigers open their final series of the regular season at home against the Twins tonight. Max Scherzer will start against Trevor May. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals lost yesterday, so Detroit now leads the American League Central Division by two games, with four to play. Any combination of three Detroit wins or Kansas City losses will clinch the title for the Tigers.
Brewers Blank Reds
Kyle Lohse closed out his season in high fashion, throwing a complete-game two-hit shutout, as he Brewers beat the Reds 5-0 last night. The victory guaranteed that Milwaukee will finish with a winning record. They still have a slight chance to reach the playoffs. San Francisco lost, so the Brewers trail the Giants by four games for the second wild card slot, with four games remaining.
The Brewers wrap up that set at Cincinnati this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will pitch against David Holmberg.
