The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a weekend set against the Yankees tonight in New York. Mike Pelfrey will face CC Sabathia. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Curtis Granderson belted a leadoff home run off Jimmy Nelson, and the New York Mets went on to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 last night. Nelson gave up just one more run before leaving in the sixth inning, but New York put the game away with two runs in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
The Brewers continue that home set against the New York Mets tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Matt Harvey.
In the opening night of the Major League Baseball Draft last night, the Detroit Tigers selected power pitcher Matt Manning from Sheldon High School in Sacramento with the ninth pick. Manning is 6’6″ tall… shorter than his 7’0″ dad, Rich, who was an NBA center.
The Milwaukee Brewers used the fifth pick to take University of Louisville outfielder Corey Ray… then took third baseman Lucas Erceg from Menlo College at number-46. With the 75th selection, they chose Puerto Rican catcher Mario Feliciano.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– Luke Paul threw a no-hitter, as Wolverine-Orbit blanked Dean Kangas-State Farm 5-0. Paul struck out 11. He outpitched State Farm’s Owen Kariniemi, who gave up just four hits while going the distance, and taking the loss. All of Wolverine’s runs came in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Lucas Lanhala.
– Pitching also dominated Superior National Bank-Stanton ‘s 4-1 victory over the Copper Country Miners. Trent Keteri gave up just two hits in a complete-game win. Tyler LaDuron scored twice for Stanton.
There will be two Twilight League games tonight…
– Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn will face Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Hancock Driving Park.
– The Copper Country Miners will meet Wolverine-Orbit at the Wolverine field.
Both games begin at 6:30.
NHL
The San Jose Sharks stayed alive in the NHL Stanley Cup series by defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 last night. The Penguins lead the series three games to two. Game six will be played Sunday night.
The Detroit Red Wings have hired John Torchetti to fill out their coaching staff for next season. Torchetti has 30 years of minor and major-league experience as a coach and player. He finished last season as the interim head coach of the Minnesota Wild, but was not offered the job full time. With the Wings, he’ll focus on forward lines and power plays.
NBA
The NBA championship series continues tonight. The Golden State Warriors lead the Cleveland Cavaliers two games to one.
Free Fishing Weekend Events
This is Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend. Anyone may fish tomorrow and Sunday without a license. All other fishing rules apply.
Family fishing events planned for this weekend include the 26th annual Ontonagon Kids Fishing Derby. Registration begins at 9:00 tomorrow at the Ontonagon Marina, and the event will end when prizes are awarded at 1:00.
The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will be held on Sunday. Registration begins at 7:00 am at the Lake Linden Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association club house on Rice Lake Road. All fish must be weighed in by 4:00. The cost is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors, and $1.00 for children.
