The Detroit Tigers returned from the All-Star break with a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night. Justin Verlander threw four scoreless innings, but gave up two runs in the fifth, and left after allowing another in the sixth. Toronto put the game away with three runs off Blaine Hardy in the eighth. Andrew Romine hit a late homer for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Blue Jays again tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Francisco Liriano. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Tigers’ closer Francisco Rodriguez has been released by the Washington Nationals. The Nationals signed him after Detroit cut him several weeks ago.
Ryan Braun’s grand slam powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Braun’s blow was the highlight of an eight-run second inning, in which Orlando Arcia also homered. Zach Davies pitched into the sixth inning, gave up all six Philadelphia runs, but still earned his 11th win of the season.
The Brewers entertain the Phillies again tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Aaron Nola.
Finlandia
Former Hancock High School standout Luke Paul has been named the assistant baseball coach at Finlandia University. Paul had spent the 2017 season as a volunteer assistant, after concluding an outstanding career as a player for the Lions. In 2016, he was named the Association of Division III Independents Pitcher and Player of the year. He owns a number of Lions’ career records.
