Panthers, Vikes and Jets Earn Girls Hoops Tourney Wins – Monday Sports Wrap

On the opening night of the girls high school basketball tournament yesterday…

In Division Four District 98, Chassell got past L’Anse 36-30. Jenna Pietila scored 14 for the Panthers, and Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 11. The Panthers will host Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in one District semifinal tomorrow night at 7:00. Baraga overpowered Lake Linden-Hubbell 73-16. Martina Jahfetson scored 23 for the Vikings. The Vikings will entertain Hancock in the other district semifinal tomorrow night at 7:00.

In Division Four, District 97, Jeffers defeated Watersmeet 47-39. Brenda Hill scored 14 for the Jets. Jeffers will face Wakefield-Marenisco in the first semifinal tomorrow at 6:00 Eastern Time. Ewen-Trout Creek stifled Bessemer 61-20. The Panthers will take on Ontonagon in the second semifinal tomorrow night at 7:30 Eastern Time. Both semifinals will be played at Bessemer.

In Division Three, Ironwood eliminated Norway 51-46. Calumet will host the Red Devils in a district semifinal game tomorrow at 7:00. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.

In Division Two, Houghton will play at Gladstone tomorrow at 6:00. Pregame coverage will start at 5:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

In boys Division Four action tonight, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will take on Munising in the first Regional semifinal at 6:00 at Negaunee. Bessemer will face Forest Park in the second semifinal at 8:00.

Houghton will face Alpena in a Division Three hockey quarterfinal tomorrow night at Sault Sainte Marie. Our coverage will begin at 6:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament play at home tonight against Northwood University. Tipoff is at 5:30. The Huskies are seeded third in the tourney.

The Michigan Tech men’s team did not qualify for the tournament.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team begins GLIAC tournament play tonight at home against Ferris State University. The men’s team opens the tournament at Ferris State.

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Colorado Avalanche tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 8:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers outslugged the Saint Louis Cardinals 9-5 yesterday. Mikie Mahtook hit two home runs. Jeimer Candelario, Jordy Mercer and catching prospect Kade Scivicque also went deep. The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will play the Colorado Rockies this afternoon.
