The Michigan Tech hockey team is ranked 19th in the final USCHO poll of the season, and 20th in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll. The Huskies finished the season with a 19-15-6 overall record and tied for second in the CCHA with a 12-10-2 mark.

The Huskies will be among four teams at the inaugural Coachella Valley Cactus Cup tournament early next year. The tourney will be held in Palm Desert, California, in the home stadium of the American Hockey League’s Coachella Firebirds. The other three teams taking part are Massachusetts-Lowell, Holy Cross and Nebraska-Omaha. Games will be played January 3rd and 4th, just a few days after Tech competes at the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament in Grand Rapids.

NHL

The Red Wings kept their playoff hopes alive last night, rallying from three goals down to edge the Canadiens 5-4 in overtime. J.T. Compher’s second goal of the night started the rally. Alex deBrincat narrowed the gap. Lucas Raymond found the net with 77 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra period, then scored the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining in overtime.

Those teams meet again tonight in Montreal, as the Wings close out their regular season. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The win keeps Detroit tied with Washington for the final wild card playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, although the Capitals hold the tiebreaker. Pittsburgh won last night, and remains one standings point back. Philadelphia was idle, and dropped two points off the pace. Each team has one regular-season game remaining. The Capitals host the Flyers tonight, and would clinch the playoff spot with a win.

NBA

After the worst season in team history, Pistons owner Tom Gores said yesterday that he will reorganize the club’s management structure under a new president of basketball operations. That person will oversee both general manager Troy Weaver and head coach Monty Williams, who are expected to be retained.

MLB

The Tigers dropped a 1-0 pitchers duel against the Rangers last night. Former Bengal Michael Lorenzen gave up three hits over five innings for Texas. Detroit starter Reese Olsen took the tough loss, pitching into the seventh, and allowing one run on six hits. He struck out eight.

The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Jon Gray. Coverage will start at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit added some pitching depth yesterday by claiming hard-throwing reliever Ty Adcock off waivers from the Mariners. He’s been assigned to Toledo.

The Brewers fell to the Padres 7-3 last night. San Diego blew the game open with six runs in the fifth inning. All were charged to Joe Ross, in a bizarre inning that saw catcher William Contreras charged with a passed ball and catcher’s interference on back-to-back pitches. Ross was called for a pitch clock violation on a full count to load the bases. Sal Frelick lost a ball in the lights in left field. Jackson Chourio homered for the Crew.

The Brewers entertain the Padres again tonight. Wade Miley will pitch against Dylan Cease.

Christian Yelich’s aching back kept him out of last night’s game – the third he’s missed since exiting early Friday night. A decision is expected today as to whether he’ll be placed on the injured list.
