In boys basketball Friday night…
– Calumet outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 79-58.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Bessemer 76-51.

In boys action today, Houghton plays at Escanaba at 3:00 in a make-up of Tuesday’s snowout.

In girls action Friday night…
– Houghton smothered West Iron County 81-39.
– Chassell outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 35-24.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ontonagon 41-35.
– Jeffers got past Bessemer 65-43.
– Baraga defeated L’Anse 61-41. Carsyn Osterman had a triple double for the Vikings – 29 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Bailey Froberg scored 16 for the Purple Hornets.

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost to the University of Northwestern 73-50 Friday night. The Eagles broke the game open early, holding the Lions to just seven points in the first quarter. Hancock freshman Taylor Pertile came off the bench to score 13 points to lead Finlandia. Houghton’s Kelsie Richards added 11.

The Finlandia men’s team also fell behind early and lost to Northwestern 78-70. The Eagles scored the first 14 points of the game. The Lions recovered and tied the game at 40 late in the first half.  They trailed by just a point with four minutes remaining, but Northwestern outscored them 11-4 down the stretch to claim the win. Marcus Geralds led Finlandia with 24 points, Brandon Robinson added 23.

Both teams will entertain North Central University today. The women’s contest starts at 4:00, and the men’s at 6:00. Fans who bring non-perishable food items to the games will get in free. The food that is collected will be distributed through a program run by the Finlandia Campus Ministry.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 4-2 at St. Catherine University Friday night. Natasha Kern and Sierra Meiners scored for the Lions. Breanna Merriam made 39 saves, and took the loss in goal. Those teams play again tonight in St. Paul.

The men’s team has the weekend off.

The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 8-3 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The Detroit defense took the night off, as the Pistons lost to the Washington Wizards 122-108 Friday night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 24 points. Jon Leuer added a season-best 19. The Wizards hit 57 percent of their shots from the floor, and nearly half of their three-point attempts. The Pistons will host the Pacers tonight.

The Detroit Red Wings will try break their four-game losing streak at home against the Anaheim Ducks tonight.

In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins visit the New York Jets tonight. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
