Ontonagon Football Dominates in Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

  • Ontonagon buried Carney-Nadeau 86-0. 

In high school volleyball…

  • Houghton continues play at the Beast of the Northeast tournament in Appleton.

At the Queen City Dale Phillips Invitational cross country meet in Marquette yesterday…

  • Marquette edged out East Kentwood for first place on the boys’ side. Those two teams claimed nine of the top 10 individual positions. Houghton came in a distant third. Hancock finished 13th. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took third place individually. Houghton’s Birk Seagren placed 13th.
  • The Houghton girls also placed third, behind Benzie Central and Marquette. Hancock took fifth place, and Baraga 10th. Houghton’s Tessa Rautiola finished fourth individually, and Sela Niska was ninth. Ella Keranen paced the Bulldogs with a 16th place finish.

College Hockey

Jack Works has been named captain of this year’s Michigan Tech hockey team. Isaac Gordon, Chase Pietila and Trevor Russell were selected as alternate captains.

MLB

The Red Sox scored three times in the top of the 10th inning, and held off the Tigers 7-5 last evening. Detroit fell behind early, but drew close when Kerry Carpenter blasted a three-run homer in the eighth, and tied the contest when Jake Rogers doubled home Zach McKinstry in the ninth. In the top of the 10th, Ceddanne Rafaela hit a two-run homer off Shelby Miller, and Jarren Duran added a solo shot off Tyler Holton. Detroit got one back in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Casey Mize returned from two months on the injured list, and gave up four runs over six innings.

The Tigers welcome the Red Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Nick Pivetta. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Mize on the roster, Joey Wentz was designated for assignment.

Alex Faedo’s season is done. He’s being treated for a right shoulder strain.

The Brewers took two from the Reds yesterday. In the afternoon contest, Eric Haase scored on a double play in the top of the 10th to give the Crew a 5-4 victory. Willy Adames and William Contreras homered. In the nightcap, the Brewers scored 10 runs in the top of the ninth to close out a 14-0 rout. Garrett Mitchell and Rhys Hoskins homered earlier in the game. Adames and Contreras went deep in the ninth. DL Hall scattered four hits over seven shutout innings.

 The Brewers play at Cincinnati again this evening. Frankie Montas will pitch against Fernando Cruz.

Trails

The Copper Harbor Trails Festival opens today. The XC race begins at 10 in downtown Copper Harbor. The downhill event starts at 3, and the junior races begin at 4. The 10k trail run and the Enduro events take place tomorrow morning. For full details, click here

Roller Derby

Keweenaw Roller Derby will host the Kingsford Krush tonight at the Colosseum. Doors open at 5, and skating begins at 6.
