MLB

Reese Olson turned in his best outing of the season yesterday, as the Tigers blanked the Twins 3-0. Olson held Minnesota to two hits over six innings, while striking out eight. Chasen Shreve and Beau Brieske allowed no more hits over the final three frames. Riley Greene homered, and Zach McInstry had a two-run double.

The Tigers took two out of three from the American League Central Division leaders, and visit the Red Sox tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Chris Sale. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and visit the White Sox this evening. Corbin Burnes will start against Michael Kopech.

The Cubs and Reds were also idle, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division remains at two-and-a-half games.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last evening…
• Garnet Garage blanked Northern Driveline 7-0. Garnet finishes its campaign with a record of 10-1, and is the league’s regular-season champion.
• REL-Mohawk Technology got past Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 5-3.

NFL

The Lions open their exhibition season tonight at home against the Giants.

Lions running back Justin Jackson surprised the team by retiring this week, after five NFL seasons. Jackson was expected to be the third option out of the backfield this year, behind David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. He was also expected to be a go-to kick returner. Detroit quickly signed veteran running back Benny Snell, Jr., to fill that spot.

The deal with new backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is finally done. While he’s now officially on the roster, don’t expect to see him on the field in tonight’s preseason game.

The Packers begin their preseason campaign tonight on the road at CIncinnati.

Roller Derby

Keweenaw Roller Derby will entertain Harbor City Roller Derby from Duluth tomorrow. Doors to the Colosseum open at 5 pm, and the action starts at 6 pm. Tickets are $5 at the door, and kids under age 10 are admitted free.
