Steve Olson has been named the 16th head coach of the Michigan Tech football team. Olson just completed his sixth season with the Huskies. He has been the defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, and coached linebackers before that. He filled in as head coach in Tech’s game at Northwood University this fall, when head coach Tom Kearly was sidelined by illness.
Before joining the MTU staff, Olson spent a dozen seasons at Minnesota-Crookston, and seven seasons at Jamestown College in North Dakota.
“Coach Olson brings the core values that we look for in coaches at Michigan Tech…integrity, loyalty, passion, teamwork, tradition, and a commitment to academic and athletic excellence,” Michigan Tech Athletics Director Suzanne Sanregret said.
“There’s no doubt Steve has big shoes to fill, but he’s learned from one of the best,” Michigan Tech President Glenn Mroz added. “The student athletes have respect for him as a person and his coaching ability.”
Kearly announced his retirement yesterday after 11 seasons as head coach.
