Ojalas Lead Red Team to Victory at UP Football All-Star Game – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB

On the day when the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers were honored, the current Tigers broke their eight-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the Washington Nationals. Miguel Cabrera had three hits, to raise his season batting average to .300. The three runs he drove in lifted him past Sammy Sosa, into 30th place on the all-time RBI list. JaCoby Jones made a spectacular over-the-fence leaping catch to rob Victor Robles of a home run. Spot starter Gregory Soto left as the Nats scored three times in the fourth inning. A parade of five relievers succeeded him, with Victor Alcántara getting the win, despite giving up Washington’s other two runs. Shane Greene earned his 22nd save.

The Tigers continue that interleague series against the Nationals this afternoon. Former National Jordan Zimmermann will start against former Tiger Max Scherzer. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have signed former Saint Louis Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal to a minor league contract. Rosenthal is trying to come back from Tommy John surgery. He pitched for the Nationals earlier this season, but was released because of control problems.

Brandon Woodruff became the first pitcher in the National League to record 10 wins this season, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 last night. Woodruff pitched into the eighth inning, and gave up one run on six hits. Eric Thames had a home run and a triple, and drove in two runs.

The Brewers will entertain the Pirates again this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Steven Brault.
