In high school hockey last night, Hancock outskated Negaunee 9-4.

In hockey tonight, Houghton skates at Escanaba. Jeffers entertains Ashland tomorrow.

In boys basketball last evening…
– Houghton outscored Calumet 56-49. Brad Sirard led the Gremlins with 19 points. Matt Ojala scored 16 for the Copper Kings, and became Calumet’s all-time leading scorer with 1,105 for his career.
– L’Anse lost to Iron Mountain 66-35.
– Ontonagon fell to Bessemer 51-41.

On the boys schedule tonight…

– Chassell visits Ewen-Trout Creek.

In girls hoops last night…
– Chassell downed Hancock 37-26. Paige Sleeman scored 15 for the Panthers, and Jenna Pietila added 11. D’Andra Kero scored 11 for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet defeated L’Anse 57-48. Elli Djerf led the Copper Kings with 18 points, and Marybeth Halonen added 15. Kaitlyn Voskuhl, Maija Rice and Brianna Keinz each scored 10 for the Purple Hornets.
– Baraga overpowered Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 65-9.
– Ewen-Trout Creek smothered Wakefield-Marenisco 62-17.

In girls action this evening…
– Houghton welcomes Iron Mountain.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City travels to Ontonagon.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team dropped an 88-68 decision at Buena Vista University yesterday. Austin Carlson led the Lions with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

MTU
Hannah Hobson of the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. Hobson scored a career-best 19 points in the Huskies’ win over Minnesota-Duluth.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines play a home-and-home series this weekend. Tonight’s game starts at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Tomorrow’s contest begins at 7:30 at the Dee.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 last night. Niklas Kronwall had a goal and an assist. Frans Nielsen, Jonathan Ericsson and Dylan Larkin also scored. Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves. The Wings host the Florida Panthers tomorrow afternoon. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 1:40 on KBear 102.3.
