MLB – Tigers Rained Out
The Detroit Tigers’ game against the Chicago White Sox was rained out yesterday. The contest will be rescheduled as part of day-night doubleheader on September 21st.

Detroit catcher Alex Avila turned in five solid innings in his first rehab assignment with the Toledo Mud Hens yesterday. Avila singled, and tagged out a runner at the plate. He’s scheduled to be the Hens’ designated hitter today, as he works his way back from a knee problem.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Minnesota Twins 5-2 yesterday. Matt Garza threw four scoreless innings, but gave up a three-run homer to Eduardo Escobar in the fifth, and a solo shot to Torii Hunter in the sixth, and suffered his 10th loss of the season. Hunter added a second solo shot in the ninth.

The Brewers conclude that interleague set with the Twins this afternoon. Mike Fiers will start against Tommy Milone.

Red Wings Conclude Draft
After using the 19th pick in the NHL Amateur Draft Friday night to take Russian forward Evgeny Svechnikov, the Detroit Red Wings wrapped up the two-day event Saturday by taking two right-handed shooting defensemen, two forwards and a goaltender. It marked the first draft in 22 years that Detroit selected no Swedish players.

Michigan Tech defenseman Matt Roy was selected by the New York Islanders with the 194th overall pick yesterday. Roy is going into his sophomore season with the Huskies. His +21 rating was third-best among NCAA freshmen last season.

North Wins U.P. All Star Football Game
Yooper Bowl LogoThe North team took an early lead, lost it, then rallied to win the annual U.P. Football All-Star Game 35-25 yesterday. L’Anse’s Brandon Kemppainen scored on a three-yard run to give the North a 21-6 halftime lead. The South battled back to take a 25-21 lead, but the North scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game away. Ishpeming’s Ozzy Hakkarinen, who will play at Finlandia this fall, scored twice. Michigan Tech recruit Lee Graff from Forest Park scored for the South team.

Bridgefest Tennis Tourney Results
The Bridgefest Tennis Tournament tournament was completed on Saturday, after having been postponed because of rain on Bridgefest weekend.

The championship match lasted 90 minutes and was won by Philip Johnson and Ken Seaton 9-8 winning the tie-breaker 7-1 over Bob Grassaschi and Mike Lahti.

The Consolation Champions were Susie and Bob Tripp, who defeated Phil Beckwith and Jim Peters.
