Norris Effective, but Tigers Fall – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Two high school softball teams will make their first-ever appearances at the regional level of the state tournament tomorrow. In Division Four at Norway, L’Anse will face Bark River-Harris at 11:00 Eastern Time. Hancock will play Rudyard at 1:00. We’ll broadcast both games, and the regional title match if either local team advances, on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 6-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. Daniel Norris pitched into the sixth inning and gave up three runs. Daniel Stumpf gave up the other three in the eighth inning. Detroit’s only run came when Brandon Dixon singled home Nicholas Castellanos in the first inning.

The Tigers will host the Minnesota Twins this evening. Matthew Boyd will start for Detroit. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Freddy Peralta turned in six strong innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Miami Marlins 5-1 yesterday. Peralta gave up a run on four hits, and struck out nine. Mike Moustakas hit two home runs, and Christian Yelich knocked one out.

The Brewers entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Rookie Davis.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play last night…
– REL-Mohawk Technologies downed Dean Kangas-State Farm 5-2.
– Superior National Bank-Stanton blanked Garnet Garage 10-0.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup championship series, the Saint Louis Blues edged the Boston Bruins 2-1 last night. Saint Louis leads the series 3-1, and could claim the Cup with a victory at home Sunday night.

NBA

In the NBA Championship Series, the Toronto Raptors visit the Golden State Warriors tonight. Toronto leads the series 2-1.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran wide receiver Jermaine Kearse to a one-year deal. Kearse played the past two seasons with the New York Jets, after spending five years with the Seattle Seahawks.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Saul Ortiz is a defender from Houston.

Fishing

The Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament will take place tomorrow, as part of the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival. Registration will be open this morning at the Baraga County Convention and Visitors Bureau office in L’Anse, and will continue from 2:00 until 5:00 at Meadowbrook Arena this afternoon. The required team captains meeting will take place tonight at 6:00 at Meadowbrook. Download the registration form here.
