NMU
After a number of cancellations because of positive COVID-19 tests, the Northern Michigan University hockey team will open its season tonight at home against Ferris State University. Both this game, and another to be played December 30th in Big Rapids, are non-conference competitions.
The Wildcats haven’t skated in competition in 284 days.
NMU and Michigan Tech will play a home-and-home series this weekend, with Friday’s contest in Houghton, and Saturday’s game in Marquette.
GLIAC
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has adopted the COVID-19 rules that member teams will follow if competition begins early next year. Among the stipulations is that contests will be staged in otherwise empty facilities, with no spectators, bands, mascots, cheer teams, or promotional activities. Spectator status will be reviewed as developments warrant.
NFL
Former Detroit Lions linebacker Chris Spielman has rejoined the team. Spielman will serve as a special assistant to team president and CEO Don Wood, and will assist in hiring the next general manager and head coach. Spielman played 10 seasons in the NFL – eight of them in Detroit. He has since worked as a television broadcast analyst.
Lions rookie cornerback Jeff Okudah underwent successful core muscle surgery yesterday. He’ll miss the rest of this year, but should be ready for next season.
Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford didn’t break any ribs on the play that forced him from last Sunday’s loss to the Packers, but he did suffer cartilage damage. Team officials continue to say that his ability to play this coming Sunday won’t be addressed until the last minute, but reports indicate they’re not optimistic.
