Nelson Shines at UP All-Star Football Game – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

A big second half boosted Team Black to a 54-28 victory over the Team Red in Saturday’s U.P. High School All Star Football Game. Dryden Nelson scored five touchdowns, and was named Team Black Offensive Player of the Game.

The Red Team led 28-21 at halftime.

Local members of the Black team included:
 • Carter Kilpela, Dryden Nelson, Lenny Bjorn and Paul Sturos from Calumet,
 • Marcus Sutherland and Ben Tampas from Lake Linden-Hubbell,
 • Dysean Allen and Eli Ostermeyer from L’Anse,
 • Chance Bridgers from Hancock,
 • Kaiden Zapolnik from Houghton, and
• Eric Abramson from Ontonagon.

Local Red team members included:
• Kip Kangas from Calumet,
• Troy Corrigan from Lake Linden-Hubbell, and
• Jaden Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek.

Meanwhile, downstate, two classes were inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Saturday, the 2022 class was honored. It includes longtime Calumet High School coach John Croze. Croze spent 31 years on the football staff, including 22 as head coach. He compiled a record of 143-71. He retired from coaching at the end of last season.

Friday, the 2021 class was honored – a year late, because of COVID-19 concerns. It includes Bill Santilli, who coached at Forest Park from 1992 to 2013, and now broadcasts high school sports for our sister stations in Iron River.

Twilight League Baseball

At the Leo Durocher Memorial Tournament at the Stanton Field Saturday…
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton edged Northern Driveline 5-4.
• Garnet Garage got past Channing 10-7.
• Northern Driveline shaded Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 7-6.
• REL-Mohawk Technology outscored Garnet Garage 11-3.

• Channing faces REL-Mohawk Technology at 11:00.
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker meets Houghton Building Supply-Stanton at 1:30.
• The championship game will begin at 4:30.

NHL

The Stanley Cup championship series between the Avalanche and the Lightning continues tonight in Tampa. Colorado leads the set 3-2.

MLB

Kody Clemens hit his first major league home run, as the Tigers downed the Diamondbacks 6-3 Saturday evening. Harold Castro had three hits, including an RBI triple. Riley Greene made two highlight-reel sliding catches in center field.

The Tigers play at Arizona again today. Beau Brieske will pitch against Dallas Keuchel. Coverage will begin at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers built an early lead, then held off the Blue Jays for a 5-4 victory Saturday. Andrew McCutcheon and Mike Brosseau homered. Corbin Burnes pitched into the eighth, gave up three runs, and earned the win.

The Brewers host the Jays again this afternoon. Chi Chi González will start against José Berríos.
