MTU’s Swoyer Honored by WCHA for 2nd Straight Week – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Michigan Tech’s Colin Swoyer has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row. Swoyer had two assists and six blocked shots as the Huskies swept Northern Michigan. Blake Pietila received Honorable Mention votes for Goaltender of the Week, and Trenton Bliss received Honorable Mention votes for Forward of the Week.

Michigan Tech assistant men’s basketball coach Josh Buettner has been promoted to the position of associate head coach. Buettner has been on Kevin Luke’s staff for 12 years. He starred for the Huskies between 2001 and 2005, and was twice named an All-American and GLIAC Player of the Year. He played three seasons of professional ball in Europe before returning to his alma mater.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ late-season swoon continued with a 27-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last night.

The Detroit Lions have fired special teams coach Brayden Coombs. Interim head coach Darrell Bevell said he made the decision after Coombs called a fake punt play late in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. Bevell said the decision went against the criteria the team has set for use of such a play, and that he had not approved the call.

Former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has been interviewed for the open Houston Texans job.

Three Lions have been named to the Pro Bowl – tight end T.J. Hockenson, center Frank Ragnow and punter Jack Fox. Hockenson and Fox are designated as starters, and Ragnow as a back-up.

Seven Green Bay Packers have been named to the Pro Bowl. Receiver Davante Adams, cornerback Jaire Alexander, tackle David Bakhtiari, guard Elgton Jenkins, running back Aaron Jones, quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Za’Darius Smith all made the squad. It’s the ninth time for Rodgers, which ties him with Brett Favre and Forrest Gregg for the most in Green Bay history.

The Detroit Pistons open the regular NBA season tomorrow at Minnesota. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
