In the final set of state high school football championship games yesterday…

• Forest Hills Central downed Mason 27-10 in the Division Three contest.
• Grand Rapids Catholic Central defeated Corunna 21-7 in the Division Five match.
• Southfield Arts and Technology shaded Belleville 34-32 the Division One game.

The local boys high school basketball season begins tonight…

• Hancock hosts Watersmeet.

College Basketball

A strong second half couldn’t overcome a big halftime deficit, as the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team lost to ninth-ranked Minnesota State-Moorhead 85-77 yesterday. Marcus Tomashek led the Huskies with 22 points. Pete Calcaterra added 20. 

A couple of last-second shots fell short, as the Northern men’s basketball team lost 74-72 to 16th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth yesterday. Dylan Kuehl led the Wildcats with 22 points.

The Tech women’s team opened a big early lead, then held off Saint Cloud State 74-68 yesterday. Alyssa Wypych scored a career-high 20 points. 

The NMU women’s team dropped a 63-42 decision to Minnesota-Duluth yesterday. 

NHL

David Perron scored twice, as the Red Wings downed the Wild 4-1 yesterday afternoon. Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal and three assists, and Dylan Larkin also found the net. Alex Lyon made 37 saves. Perron’s second goal was the 300th of his career.

The Wings visit the Rangers Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons welcome the Wizards tonight.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Ravens outscored the Chargers 20-10. 

In tonight’s contest, the Bears visit the Vikings. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Free agent pitcher Kenta Maeda will join the Detroit Tigers. The 35-year-old right-hander has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract. He went 6-8 with a 4.23 ERA in 21 starts for the Twins last season.
