MTU Women's Hoops Grabs Share of First Place – Sunday Sports Wrap

– Hancock smothered DePere 8-0 in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Alex Nordstrom scored four goals for the Bulldogs.
– Houghton defeated Bay Port 5-3.

Friday night…
– Hancock scored the first four goals of the game, and cruised to an 8-4 victory over Bay Port. Ted Randell tallied three of those early goals. Alex Nordstrom and Jacob Norkol each scored twice for the Bulldogs.
– Houghton defeated DePere 5-2.
– L’Anse got past Menominee 6-4.

HS GBB Clip ArtIn girls high school basketball Saturday, Hancock overpowered Elcho (WI) 77-44. Maija Sebbas led the Bulldogs with 28 points, and Taylor Pertile added 24.

In girls play Friday night…
– Houghton bounced West Iron County 52-32.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Wakefield 55-41.
– Baraga edged Jeffers 47-46.
– Ontonagon shut down Bessemer 40-29.

In boys hoops Friday night…
– L’Anse lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 72-59. Trevor Uren scored 16 for the Purple Hornets.
– Ewen-Trout Creek throttled Republic-Michigamme 69-27.
– Chassell downed Stephenson 69-59. Hunter Rautiola scored 29 points for the Panthers.

Danielle Blake scored 25 points, as the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team defeated Saginaw Valley State 67-56 Saturday. Mackenzie Perttu added a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and the Tech defense held SVSU to just 10 points in second quarter, and again in the fourth quarter. The win moves the Huskies into a first-place tie with the Cardinals in the GLIAC North Division. today.

The Tech men’s team lost to SVSU 68-62. Bryan Heath led all scorers with 16 points.

The Tech hockey team had this weekend off.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams defeated Hillsdale Saturday – the women 64-53, and the men 70-64.

The Wildcats hockey team was off this weekend.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams lost at North Central University Saturday. The women’s team got off to an early lead, but the Rams held the Lions to just eight points in the second quarter, and surged to a 77-60 victory. Julia Daavittila led Finlandia with 21 points and eight rebounds. The men’s team led by two at halftime, only to fall behind by 15 in the second half on the way to a 99-93 defeat. Jordan LaPlant scored 26 for the Lions.

On Friday, both Finlandia teams were overpowered at the University of Northwestern. The women’s team scored just three points in the first quarter, and five in the second, and fell 71-59.  Brooke Turin led the Lions with 12 points, and Julia Daavettila added 10. The men’s team trailed 51-17 at halftime, on the way to a 93-45 loss. Terrance Fuller and Marcus Geralds each scored 11.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 15-2 at Adrian College on Saturday, and was shut out 11-0 at Adrian Friday night. The Finlandia men’s team fell to the Milwaukee School of Engineering 3-2 Friday night. Alex Holm scored both of the Lions’ goals. Those teams play again the afternoon at 2:15 (moved up from the original 4:00 start time) at the Houghton County Arena.

The Calumet Wolverines outshot the Monroe Blues 60-39 Friday night, but lost the game 9-7. On Saturday, the Wolverines lost Mosinee 9-3.

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Marquette Iron Rangers 9-4 Saturday night.

The Anaheim Ducks scored twice in the third period, then held on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 Saturday night. Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots, and took the loss for Detroit. Darren Helm , Tomas Jurco and Danny DeKeyser scored for the Wings, who visit the Islanders tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold a big first half lead, and lost to the Nuggets in Denver 104-101 Saturday night. Denver broke the game open by scoring 39 points in the third quarter. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 20 points. The Pistons play at Utah Monday night. We’ll join the game after Red Wings hockey on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championship games will be played today. New England plays at Denver at 3:05, and Arizona kicks off at Carolina at 6:40. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
